🦩REVIEW🦩 Truth or Beard (Winston Brothers #1) by Penny Reid 🦩“It was fear that held me hostage, trapped in indecision purgatory…” 🦩 Well I just discovered another world of Rom-Com books, and I am over the moon!!! Penny Reid has a new die-hard fan in me that now craves her stories like Betty Crocker brownie mix (I’d die for one now btw). Wanderlust is Jessica’s true essence but for that to happen, she needs to go home just to make enough money to travel the world. She’s been infatuated with Beau since she can remember, one of the Winston twins, but she can’t stand Duane, they’ve been having an ongoing joke fight over the years but one identity confusion has Jessica wondering if her true infatuation was real or not. The fear of not being free is what keeps Jessica with one foot in and foot out; she can’t think of being tied down, but Duane is making things really hard with an offer she can’t resist. A romance-comedy full of sweet moments, steamy chapters and a beautiful and surprising end. Loved it!!! So the rating above means 4.5, the only reason this didn’t get a 5 is because of the last two books in the series. They were well written and definitely tied up all the questions left over from the other books. However, they were really heart wrenching and a little frustrating, but even the author admits they were the hardest for her to write. Hence the rating, even with those two, the series is humorous, witty and very fun to read. Now to give you some context the books follow the Winston family; a family of 6 brothers and 1 sister, a sweet southern mamma who raised them right and a no good father who’s out of the picture but still meddles and manages to cause some trouble. A quick note that if you do want to read this series, that the 1st book is not the one listed. The 1st book is actually the final book in another one of Penny Reid’s series and is called Beauty and the Mustache. I know what you’re thinking, but you do not have to read the other series to understand that book, lord knows I didn’t. It sets up the series nicely and you should definitely read that one first. It's absolutely hilarious, there’s this scene with a rabid raccoon, a gun and some stripping that had me in stitches. Anyway, back to the series as a whole, each book focuses on one sibling as they find their perfect match. With old superstitions, cute southern sayings, pranks galore and hilarious dialogue I highly recommend giving this series a try. The plots are just complicated enough to keep you on the edge of your seat. The men are all alpha males, but total southern gentleman and each heroine is a total badass in their own way. Oh and of course some great toe curling sexy scenes that will make you blush if you’re trying to read in public. So please go check it out!
Sample Scene: This scene is from Truth or Beard: Enemies to Lovers small town romantic comedy (Winston Brothers book 1) but again its not technically book 1! IT is written in the point of view of Jessica James our (female) main character who is talking to her good friend Claire. They ar at the music night held in the town every Friday.
Claire tsked. “Two weeks ago, when we were in Nashville, you walked up to that sexy stranger outside the club and kissed him.”
“You bet me ten dollars to do it. Plus it’s not like that with Beau. Plus that guy was flirting with me. Plus I like kissing.”
“What do you mean? You don’t want to kiss Beau?”
I whispered frantically, “Of course I want to kiss him, but only in theory. Who is your famous crush? If a super-hot Hollywood actor who also happened to be a great person wanted to take you home-and the lights stayed on during the deed-what would you do? I mean not in theory. Honestly, what would you do?”
Claire looked at me for a long moment then asked, “Would I get a heads up a few months ahead of time? So I could eat low carb and start working out?”
“No.”
“Then honestly, I’d run the other way.”
“Exactly! I don’t know how to describe it. It’s like, if he actually wanted to kiss me I think I'd die of mortification.”
I know these sample scenes can be a little hard to read without more information or context, but it’s just to give you an idea of the writing style not a real sneak peak because that would be unfair to these lovely authors.
