Musicals

Oh gosh, this is a hard one. I love love musicals so narrowing down is hard - I grew up on classic movie musicals like Ths Sound of Music, Fiddler on the Roof, The King and I, My Fair Lady, Jesus Christ Superstar, etc. My first proper stage musical was Cats and back then a big show only came to town every few years - we’re spoilt for choice now luckily, with at least 2-3 touring productions a year (I saw West Side Story just before Christmas and School of Rock is coming up in March).

I could quite literally could gush about musicals all day! (Or answer faves for specific musicals)

While I think Les Miserables is my favourite musical of all time, and Hamilton a close second, I think my favourite character is actually Glinda from Wicked.

I love the Wizard of Oz, and Glinda in her bubble and beautiful sparkly gown trolling the Wicked Witch was always a highlight. And I love the musical retelling - I’d listened to the cast album with the incredible Indina Menzel and Kristin Chenoweth obsessively before I was able to see the show in London (with Adam Garcia as Fiyerk who was a++)

I really love that Wicked in many ways is Glinda’s story - she opens and closes the show, and the main character arc is ostensibly hers, from catty mean girl to benevolent ruler, she has the most growth - learning that happy isn’t necessary what happens when all your dreams come true.

MCU

I was very very tempted to say Thor (I have a favourite male character Type, y’all!), but I think I’m actually going to go with the Queen of Asgard herself, Valkyrie (Brunnhilde)

Is there a better scene in the mcu than her flashback to the valkyrie and their final ride against Hela? Poetic cinema. And then Valkyrie charging in asride her winged horse with her sword against Thanos? Sublime.

I can’t wait to see her in Love and Thunder, but honestly she needs her own spinoff too.

Smallville

When I was a kid watching the original Superman movies, I always wanted to be Margot Kidder as Lois Lane, only solidified when I watched Teri Hatcher in Lois & Clark. By the time Smallville came around, I really only got invested once Lois showed up, and Erica Durance kills it in the role.

Lois is ballsy and abrasive, but so charming, and I love her to bits for her determination and loyalty. She’s a brilliant character, not only as (at first) a foil for Clark, and (later) as a romantic/life partner, providing much needed levity amidst all the destiny/responsibility droning that went on in the show. Lois is a delight in every incarnation, but especially in this one.

Call the Midwife

I’ve seen the early seasons and a few of the latter Christmas specials, but there was one character I adored right from the start, and that’s Chummy!

(The lack of Chummy gifs was really disappointing...)

Her awkwardness was so endearing (and relatable!) and she was just such a lovely character to watch.

It didn’t take me long to realize as a kid that I had a cool grandma. 🎈 My parents were young when they had me, so Mimi was young when she became a grandmother. Her nursing career was in full swing as I was growing up, so I remember going with her to the hospital while she explained what she did: helping cancer patients harvest their own white blood cells so that they could receive a transfusion they would react positively to after chemo treatment. I didn’t fully recognize what an early adopter she was until the company that manufactured the equipment hired her to teach other nurses how to do it. 🎁 Those were Mimi’s traveling years: every time I called her, she was in a different airport—from Pennsylvania to South Africa, Oregon to Singapore. Before she retired, she taught all around the world, helping the helpers. 🎈 One of my favorite memories was when she invited me to join her in Dublin, where she was teaching, while I was studying abroad in southern England: we went sightseeing all around town, and the nurses she had been teaching invited us out to dinner—and then to a pub crawl afterwards. Later on, Mimi met me in Stratford-upon-Avon, and we attended a truly magical showing of Midsummer’s Night’s Dream there. 🎁 That’s Mimi in a nutshell: adventurous, literature-loving, pioneering, and game for anything. I’m so glad she’s mine for keeps. 🎈 I love you very much, Mimi, and happy 80th birthday! So I got to meet up with these absolutely amazing ladies at the new Primark cafe yesterday 😁💖 and I had SUCH A FANTASTIC TIME! These ladies are truly awesome 😎 Jess and I had met before, but hadn’t seen each other in aaaggeees, and Rhian and I have only ever communicated online, so I’m not gonna lie, I was a bit nervous about meeting up in person. But I didn’t need to be; we got on like a house 🏠 on fire 🔥! Cardiff should look out; it’s got a new dream team of badass ladies 💪🏻 All three of us have a disability/chronic illness, and it felt really awesome to hang out in a group where your disability is just a normal part of life... you can pepper it into the conversation in between dating and holidays and kids and cake! We’re definitely gonna make hanging out a regular thing; there’s already plans to try a cocktail 🍹 bar!
