#truthtuesdays I'm a middle child and a Gemini so I'm super hard headed and SUCH a loner I AM EXTREMELY SOCIALLY AWKWARD 😂😂😂(the people I have as friends are that because the universe forced it so ask the tribe I think we're almost the same person)... because of the aforementioned relationships are blah to me if it works it works if it doesn't 🤷🏽‍♀️. I tell people all the time if I don't force time/relationships with family why would I do it with anyone else? I can't say that I walk to the beat of my own drum because I'm not sure it's even an instrument that I follow 🤦🏽‍♀️😏 but it works for me. I've always believed in doing shit my own way just as long as I'm not hurting anyone and I AM EXTREMLY VOCAL/TRANSPARENT ABOUT WHAT IM THINKING/FEELING!!! if for any reason someone tries to change that they cease to exist to me! Here’s my #TruthTuesdays - coming down from #Glastonbury is always tricky but this time it’s super emotional 😭 It was fun getting to meet Mark Ronson, Christine and the Queens, Slaves and Bastille. But the real value was witnessing so much inspiring music. Most inspiring were Jon Hopkins (in the flesh), Stormzy (on tv when we got back), and performing alongside my Beatbox fam at the UK Beatbox Champs takeover at 5am on the Friday. All of these performers showed such artistry. Back home and I am feeling emotional about my show - it was such a buildup and now it’s over. It’s weird but I’m grieving it being over. I’m remembering the sheer power I felt filling up that colossal stage and beatboxing through that enormous sound system 📢📢📢 Meanwhile I’m cringing about the moments when I couldn’t see my LED pads because of the sunligh, triggering the wrong samples, at one point improvising my way around the music grinding to an actual halt 😬 And I’m celebrating the whole thing. It was magical ⚡️ Now I find myself in a familiar predicament. How do I top playing on the Other Stage? Immediately I feel the pressure to rise even higher. I like how Stormzy stood up for his culture - for grime and for rap and for black artists and black people and British music as a whole. I would like to continue to stand up for my culture - for all the British immigrants, the mental health survivors, the beatboxers, live loopers, the producer-performers. I would like to continue to stand up for all the underdogs. It’s a lot to represent. But i am so grateful to still be here to keep going and give it my best shot. Here’s to Glastonbury. I’m inspired. Today I attended #thiscanhappen18, a huge conference on mental health. I learnt a lot and I truly believe courage is contagious. So this week for #truthtuesdays I want to invite you to #shareyourfailures. What is one tough lesson you have learnt? One of mine was this past summer. I was halfway through my album crowdfunding campaign and I had just done Episode 01 of my livestream series from @jason_mraz’s hotel room to 95,000 viewers, followed by @billbailey the following week with more high profile guests lined up every week over the next few weeks. My fundraising total had got off to a strong start but had then sat firmly at 15% and wasn’t looking likely to hit 100. The fear of public failure was building to a fever pitch even as the profile was building. I had started to spin out, ironically my mental health flared up, and I had to cancel all my guests so I could rest. I felt awful and ashamed - like I had let people down and let myself down. It was painful, but simultaneously empowering to be able to put my hands up and say “hey - I’m not ok”. After a break I came back, this time working a little slower and with more purpose. Doing the show monthly, instead of weekly gave me the time to do it carefully, and gave my audience more of a chance to catch them all. Now I’ve got exciting guests booked well into next year. My album is funded, recorded, and the next single is out this Friday. I have been speaking on music industry panels about mental health. Plus I have just found out I will be giving a TED talk next year about my journey with mental health. My hard learned lesson: when you’re pushing your own boundaries it’s ok to go slow. To ebb and flow and let the waves of success and withdrawal happen naturally is how we can make that crucial progress, rather than to beat ourselves up over the perceived lack of perfection.
