WIP GAME 🖋️

The night before they intend to kill him, Hvitserk dreams of the burning Franks. He has not thought of them in years—though of course, he had been little more than a boy when Ragnar had taken him and Ubbe to Paris. His memories have faded by now, but in his dream as he had in real life, he follows Ubbe through the wet grass and up the hill to watch Harald’s men set the prisoners ablaze. From across the field, he can hear their laughter underneath the screams of the dying men.

After the screaming has ended and the fire has dwindled, he goes with Ubbe to see what is left—the charred wood and blackened bodies, the stench of burned meat hanging thick in the air. Greasy globs of ash cling to his clothes and skin. He picks up something shiny from among the ashes and cleans it on his shirt. It turns out to be a belt buckle carved with initials in a language he does not know. He puts it in his pocket.

“Why did they burn them?” he asks Ubbe in a hushed voice.

Ubbe aims a kick at the remnants of the wooden structure. “They were Franks,” he explains, though Hvitserk has a feeling that he doesn’t understand either. “Our enemies. So they must have deserved it.”

When he wakes, he finally knows the truth: they did not burn the Franks because of anything they had done. They burned them because they wanted to hear them scream. He wants to tell Ubbe, though some part of him knows that Ubbe stopped listening to him long ago.

His brother does not come. The sky begins to lighten; the sun shines through the cracks in the timbers and hurts his eyes. He thinks he should be afraid when they come to burn him, but the only thing he can think about as they drag him to the pyre is how bright it is outside. The crowd watches in silence, a faceless mass; he knows his brothers are somewhere amongst them but he could not recognize them if he tried. They set him on top of the pyre and tie his hands, and even as the arrows fly and the flames begins to rise, even as he feels the impact of the axe and the sudden plunge into the icy water, it all feels as though it is happening to someone else.

Ubbe pulls him out half drowned and shivering uncontrollably, and in an instant Bjorn is shouting in his face. His brother’s voice is tinged with rage and disappointment. Hvitserk knows he was supposed to scream: but even in dying, he has been a failure, and therefore he must be cast out, banished, forgotten. He cannot muster up a word of protest as they take him and shove him roughly out the gates and close them firmly behind him.

Don’t waste your time looking back, he remembers Ragnar telling him. You’re not going that way.  

He doesn’t look back. He stumbles his way along the road, soaked and still shaking, and when his legs finally give out it is almost a relief. He sprawls out on the ground and gazes up at the cloudless sky. It is the deepest blue he has ever seen. Before he can stop himself, a choked sob ripples up from his chest, and then another. I am still alive.

He takes a deep breath and screams.
