Gender in the Metaphysical Determinism verse

this is gonna be partly bullet fic mostly pure meta because i just,,, wanna talk asldkjsdlj

Humans

who fucking knows

incredibly variable from society to society but the one thing all the other species can agree on is that no one is more fucking intensely invested in gender than fucking humans

whether theyre discussing their own genders or the genders they think should be ‘allowed’/valid or how dumb other people are being about gender, no species invests more mental resources to discussing Gender As A Concept than humans

Elves

relatively fluid - living for hundred to sometimes over a thousand years will do that - but not extremely so

its normal for an elf to switch around gendered pronouns and default presentation a few times over the course of their life, often referred to as phases but not in the condescending way you hear people use it in our world

but doing it “too often” is a quick way to get a reputation for being finicky and indecisive

the twins mom, Dot, is about two hundred and gets a bit of side-eye from her family because she’s gone through five of these phases - she’s a woman right now, and has been two other times, as well as man once and she was nonbinary when she met Larry/when the twins were children. She’s been their mom, as opposed to their Bibi for about six years by the time of Tyndall Effect/Murphy’s Law

Hobbits

hobbits dont care about gender they care about the four f’s, Fun, Family, Friends and Food

the most fluid and the least judgemental they are just out here to have a good time

Virgil for example is agenderfluid and usually uses he/him pronouns with occasional they/them and she/her days (in that order) and this got less than no reaction from his hobbit family members

Dwarves

dwarves have very little sexual dimorphism and most dwarvish languages dont differentiate between genders for pronouns

the prototypical dwarvish reaction to other species discussing gender is “what the literal FUCK are you people talking about?”

Orcs

most invested in gender aside from humans but dont use the same binary

all orc children are considered to be the same gender and use “juvenile” pronouns - they arent considered to be fully gendered beings until theyre adults

teenagers decide their genders at a coming of age ceremony, at which point they start using either masc or fem pronouns, traditionally

Emile is an orc, got to that point, and was like “but what if i dont uuuh want to be??? a fully gendered being???”

so Emile is a demiguy - in his first language they use masc, ‘juvenile’, and neutral-adult (which are neo-pronouns to orcs) pronouns and in english he uses interchanging he/they

Archfey

the only thing all archfey genders have in common is that they are FancyTM
