In the latest update about frustration™ about canon (subtextual) Johnlock:

JOHN DIDN'T HAVE TO GRAB SHERLOCK'S NAPE SO SOFTLY IN THE SIGN OF THREE AND THAT TOO RIGHT IN FRONT OF MARY WHEN EVERYONE ELSE WAS DANCING AFTER THE RECEPTION!!!

*exhales* I'm fine now! (Really not.)

(I mean, he might as well touch his forehead with Sherlock in that scene, why didn't he? I've yet to see a nape grab happen in fiction outside of the romantic context, that too if the grabber has been recently married, with the wife standing right there, but whatever.)

LISTEN I haven't been okay since that episode aired. I mean it wasn't just that one either...

Like this whole episode fucked me up so much. Like, this is the episode that MADE TJLC a THING. This was a wedding episode that SHOWED NO WEDDING.

It showed a "best man ask" that looked like a proposal.

It showed the groom and the best man DRESSED EXACTLY ALIKE LOOKING LIKE A COUPLE greeting guests.

It showed Sherlock being the one shown giving vows.

Every time they cut back to wide shots of the head table, John and Sherlock are ALWAYS front and centre, and contrasted SO MUCH against the background that the bride and maid of honour are washed into it.

This whole episode Mary was a bloody afterthought. A wedding is traditionally thought of as "the bride's day" but like... The whole reception is about John and Sherlock.

Like, what did Mofftiss THINK the audience would think??? Why WOULDN'T we think S4 was queerbaiting after THIS being a midpoint episode in the entire series and NOT have these two TOGETHER at the end AS the couple?

It's frustrating because TSo3 is one of my fave episodes, but it's hard to not see it as one giant "gay joke" after S4. I'm glad I love this episode to bits that it overrides that thought.

Hello Steph, the wedding episode feels weird to me. I mean Sherlock and John dressed the same, greeted guests together, sat at the center of the table that was decorated with apparently green carnations, etc. If I attend a wedding like this in real life or they were a Victorian couple, I'd say Mary is a beard. I know part of it was fan service, so we can get cute screenshots. Any other speculations on why the wedding was designed like that? What are they trying achieve? Love from the US

Oh yeah, TOTALLY was really weird, and why a lot of people started to really believe that Johnlock was the direction it was going. Like, even the promo photos, they looked like two grooms together. The best man and the groom don't usually dress alike, LOL. Even Mary was sidelined in all the promo photos. It was a huge discussion back in the day, and the TSo3 meta is what got me into the fandom head-on in the first place.

Like... the wedding episode, promoted as such... had everything BUT an actual wedding in it. You never see them get married. You see John essentially proposing to Sherlock, Sherlock be a bridezilla, and like... Mary was so not even involved.

So yeah, to from THAT to ... whatever TFP was is... something else indeed.

Happy weekend Steph! I have a question regarding a line in S3E2 the stag night knee-touching scene. I just couldn't tell who delivered the line, "I don't mind". I don't see either of them moving their lips so it seems the line was added via ADR. And I couldn't tell whose voice it was since it was like a whisper. I was wondering whether there were any discussions or hypotheses regarding this line. Thank you and hugs!

OOOOOOHHHH the infamous knee scene! Many a meta has been written about that scene and about TSo3 in general. Even I wrote one here (where the Gif comes from)

With this video here, you can clearly hear who says what. John says, "I don't mind" and Sherlock says "Anytime".

Ah, definitely have to say TAB, followed by TSo3. I just really love Sherlock in both episodes, and I love how deep into his character we got. And I spent a LOT of my meta-time here in the fandom studying and writing about both of those episodes, so they have a soft spot in my heart. TAB just was such a fascinating episode to study, because I loved delving into the subtext of it all. And TSo3 was just... pining Sherlock the whole ep. I just am sad they never gave us a satisfactory conclusion, is all.

I remember seeing this meta/analysis (I think a screenshot of it actually) of the scene in tsot where Sherlock vomits as a comparision for him giving a blowjob (being on his knees, the residue on his lips etc) and I can't find it anywhere now! “Neither of us were the first, Sherlock” or however that line from Mary in tsot goes. If we’re supposed to view Sherlock and John as 100% straight as an arrow, what does this mean? What. What does it mean? Because that line has some Implications (TM) of being Not Straight (TM).

Yeah, ABSOLUTELY. Mary knows, 100%, that Sherlock loves and is pining over John, and she’s fucking rubbing it into his face the entirety of their barely-there “friendship”. I’m expanding upon this a little bit in another ask that’s sitting in my drafts, but essentially, it could be that John opened up to her about Things, probably about Sholto, and she notices Sherlock’s jealousy around the whole thing so she just wants to hurt Sherlock even more than he is already at that moment. The WHOLE wedding is her basically saying “nah nah, I won John, sucks to be you!!!”. It’s gross.

so, i know people have talked about lavender/lilacs and the whole elephant in the room thing— but i’ve also heard people talking about magpies in the series. what are your thoughts on this?

Ah, yes, it’s been discussed before on this post here; it the most well known post and the one really only of note in my tag, so yeah.

Interesting thing is the last image in that post, regarding the poems about magpies, which, when I did research, I’m wondering if someone purposely used the wrong text to suit the post because the second version of the magpie poem with “death” as the “four for death” thing is supposed to be “birth”. Which I then would say would be interesting because each line would have represented one of the series:

One for sorrow Two for Mirth Three for a wedding Four for Death

But through googling, I found out that this version is actually Insomnium’s, a Finnish Death metal band, version of the poem, and therefore technically is not correct. The fourth line is supposed to be “four for birth” so yeah. Anyway. 

But anyway, the magpies thing is interesting nonetheless. I don’t know enough about the symbolism of magpies other than what I skimmed on this site here, which essentially boils down to magpies symbolize letting go of what’s holding you back.......... which is A Lot™ in terms of these idiots LOL.
