we need to make less immigrant children jokes and start more discourse/start unpacking the dichotomy of parent who was privileged but living in “third world” country vs child who is living in “first world” but is low on the social structure because I feel like a lot of my peers have the Same Experience but the class/privilege nuances are a little weird to talk about so no one talks about it
#one of my fav little conversations about this#was actually#kim’s convenience#when the two guys were like ‘we had maids and horses and property at home’#why did we come here#or the discourse in ms marvel#about her grandmas house being huge#like I grew up with a lot of fellow immigrant kids#who had the growing in shit conditions meanwhile their parents were sending Money Back Home experience#and like I didn’t really have that#but I did have a little bit of a culture shock as a kid#when I finally visited Family Back Home as a teen#and realized a lot of my extended family is like well connected and country club elite#meanwhile I’m literally from the fucking projects#which is fine!#but it’s been funny unpacking How My Mother Grew Up vs How I Grew Up#because I still remember the first time she casually mentioned she like didn’t need to wash dishes for most of her life#because they had a maid lol
