Trachycarpus fortunei (Chusan palm, Chinese windmill palm) forms the major feature in this tsubo-niwa (courtyard garden) in a traditional Kyoto house. This dioecious evergreen palm forms a small tree with a stout, fibre-covered trunk with a terminal tuft of divided, fan-shaped leaves up to 1m in width. The plant produces large arching sprays of small, light yellow flowers and on female plants these can be followed by fruits.
