One of the many reasons Yellow Magic Orchestra subverted pop was the fact that each member of the group worked within the idiom as a session musician. However, that does not mean the record they played on sucked, they were quite fabulous. Check this tune by Tatsuro Yamashita to see what I want to say, where both Sakamoto and Hosono contribute to the song's enormous soar. Seriously, this is, if you ask me, one of the most uplifting compositions possible, you can feel the entire melody that almost blinds us with the overwhelming happiness. Nonetheless, you can understand the criticism about this being cheesy. Still, that should not influence our judgement about the quality of the piece. While the sentimentality can be too much for some, you cannot deny this is a top-notch music.
