It had been quite some time since Sandy had taken a proper date to a social event. More often than not, he was too busy working to be bothered with entertaining someone else. But tonight was a bit different. Well, it wasn't so much that the party was anything special, but the company which he chose to take.
Stella Russell was someone who had become increasingly interesting to him. She was a stunning beauty, that much could not be denied, but it wasn't her looks that engaged him. She was different from many of the women he encountered, especially in his line of work. Beautiful though she was, her mind was a fortress that he'd yet to unlock -- and that was unusual. Sandy usually could read people so easily, but with her, it was a little more difficult. Finding out who Stella Russell really was would be quite a bit of fun, he figured. And not only that, but given her profession, she could prove to be useful.
So he picked her up promptly at seven o' clock, as promised. She looked lovely as ever, and he greeted her with a kiss on each cheek.
"I'm so glad you've decided to accompany me," he said as he opened the car door for her. "I know you prefer to go to such events by yourself, so I'm flattered you'd come along."
After helping her into the car, Sandy shut the door behind them and signaled for his driver to take off. Before arriving at Stella's home, Sandy had considered perhaps bringing a rose for the lady, but he knew she wasn't the sort to be impressed by such things. And if there was one thing he hoped to do this evening, it was impress her.
He knew that would be no small order.
As the car pulled up to the theatre, Sandy helped Stella from the car. It looked like the Mayor had done a fine job of getting everyone who was anyone in Chicago to be in attendance. There was all sort of profit to be made here this evening, and Sandy didn't intend to overlook it.
But there was still the matter of Miss Russell.
As he guided the pair of them inside, Sandy turned to her and asked, "So, darling, shall we take in the ballet? Or would you prefer a show of a different kind?"
