I told mama I always dreamed of going to the #statueofliberty. When I found out you can up to the crown, I was obsessed! Planning my #ttisfifty #ttprnyc19 trip included setting calender reminders to make reservations for certain places. So, I got the #crowntickets four months in advance, as soon as the date was available. Once on the ferry, I felt a lump in my throat when we passed #LadyLiberty, imagining the #immigrants on long ship journeys seeing her, grateful for surviving the long haul & hopeful to remain in this new land. I was finally here! Bunny laughed at the number of stairs we would need to climb to reach the very top, from the pedestal to the crown it is 354 steps, equivalent to 20 stories. We walked around then up to the pedestal & checked in to use our crown wristbands to make the ascent on the winding, narrow spiral stairs. The ranger very calmly told us to take our time, use the five rest ledges as needed & to enjoy the experience. I heard mama whisper in my ear, "Ay mija, listen to her, you don't want to end up on the gurney they have waiting just in case!" We made our way, slow & steady, appreciating the metalwork, the height, looking down from a platform was intense. At the very top, a ranger was explaining Lady Liberty's details including how sturdy her copper "skin" has held up over a hundred years. Only her torch needing major restoration, as the ranger pointed out of the crown window on the side so we could see her arm holding the torch. Heading down also held sights, like seeing the relief of the inside of her face. The museum at the base was full of details & artifacts, all so interesting to see in person. My visit was everything I hoped for!
