1. What was the original thought that led to the creation of this character?
So I made a war magic wizard npc for the d&d game I was running and it made me fall in love with the subclass. When I was developing my character for Sky Seas, I really wanted to play a war magic wizard. I went into it hoping to make a wind mage who didn't want to be a wind mage/has baggage around their relationship with Zeru (the Wind Goddess). I also wanted the wizard to be similar to Olruggio from Witch Hat Atelier, in that he overworks himself for the sake of others. I did name Olly after Olruggio (though I made their full name Oleander for lore reasons). Since that initial concept, Olly has developed into a cross between Olruggio and Agott in terms of character influence.
11. Is there any existing character from other media that your character resembles? Was that resemblance intentional or was that a coincidence?
So Olly is like a beautiful younger butch version of DJ from Event Horizon.
This was not an intentional choice & was fully a subconscious design decision when I was playing around with character designs. When I first designed Olly, I went through a bunch of visual designs. I almost went with one that would have them with a fluffy bob and darker hair. I moved away from that design because it reminded me too much of my oc, Khed'a, and I wanted to mix it up. I was going for a tired, wretched sort of mage look, and ended up with Butch Jason Isaacs with a few more vitamin deficiencies. Part of that is because DJ's character from Event Horizon has a lot of DNA for Olly's character (personality/role wise). Just like, instead of being on a spaceship, they are on an enchanted airship in a dark fantasy. The mannerisms are all there. I think that's why I subconsciously channeled some of DJ's vibes into Olly's design. I didn't realize this all until recently when I rewatched Event Horizon LMAO
19. What is your general favourite thing about the character? What is your least favourite?
My favourite thing about Olly is how much they care. I really like this concept of a character who comes across as cold and unfeeling on the surface but then you observe their actions and behavior and realize that they are actually a tightly wound up ball of desire, namely the desire of wanting to help others/be useful to others. So with Olly there's this thick shell of what they have to present in order to be good at what they do and stay focused on the present vs the thing driving them, which is their love, care, and protectiveness for everyone around them. That's actually the part of them that reminds me a lot of Laurent (a major character influence for them and one of my Characters of All Time).
My least favourite thing about Olly is that they have this tendency to assume other people can't care for them or love them. (typing this out is so sad LMAO). Basically because they lost their best friend in childhood, they have known emotional intimacy from a young age. After losing it once, they never want to lose it again. Part of that is ensuring no one gets close enough to put them at risk of that. So a defense mechanism they employ is assuming others aren't interested in them/that it's not possible for another person to love them.
FOR EXAMPLE, Olly will only hook up with a person if they've confirmed that person is not actually interested in them romantically. Because if the person who they're hooking up with genuinely loves them, that makes it too close to emotional intimacy, which they are allergic to. I say this is my least favourite thing about them, but it's more a thing I have to keep in mind with their character relationships. Sometimes it comes up as them being a bit abrasive when they could've been kind, sometimes it comes up as them freezing when someone shows them care. I think it just feels like my least favourite thing about them because I want them to be able to feel loved. Though it is a juicy dynamic to write around especially with their different character relationships (Zorian, Penny, Felicity, etc). That's what the character development is all about I suppose.
