Saw an almost banger of a thread critiquing TTS and how it portrays marriage as like a prison/boring/bad and they’re mostly correct (I don’t even know the half of Chris sonnenbergs deal but his comments about how boring it would be if they let raps and Eugene marry in the show were so odd. Also they dumbed down Eugene’s character too often in favour of Cassandra. It’s like when someone writes a fanfic in favour of one ship and mischaracterizes/bashes the competing love interest)
HOWEVER
They referred to Eugene in the thread the entire time as Flynn Ryder and i think that’s a little annoying if you’re gonna write up a whole thing.
Like listen you can dislike the show (I have a love hate relationship with it) etc. and write thinkpieces on how it shits on the movies themes or something but Eugene CHOOSES to go by Eugene by the end of the movie anyway, that’s not just a show thing. Like at least get the names right if you claim to be such a fan of ~the original movie~
(Also I’d argue that the shows main theme is very much not “marriage means life is over”, it’s more of a weird undertone and you can tell that at least some writers see it that way. But honestly even if the way they went about it was weird, I think it’s good raps and Eugene didn’t marry right away, (she was 18!!) I’d just write the reasons a bit different. Also that plot point came from the epilogue in the movie? “After years of asking and asking and asking I finally said yes”)
