Traintober25 Day 14 Of Falcons and Dukes
Sir Handel was dozing on the wharf when Duke rolled onto the track next to him. Normally he would at the very least be irritated when another engine interrupted his dozing, but Sir Handle still remembered the years of thinking Duke scrapped all too clearly for his reaction to the old engine to ever be anything but relief, even if he would never admit it out loud. Besides, Grandpuff knew how much Sir Handle enjoyed his time dozing and wouldn't have disturbed him without reason.
Sir Handle closed his eyes, content to doze until Duke spoke whatever was on his mind.
It was pleasantly quiet for a long time, the autumn air swirling around the two engines, the smell of a pastry cooking within the workers hut wafting along the breeze. Perhaps he could convince his driver to give him one or a few.
“Sir Handel.” Duke finally spoke, as if testing the name.
“That's my name, don't wear it out.” Sir Handle said, but the day was too pleasant for him to even try to make it sound like he meant it.
“Yes.” Duke mused, “it's been your name longer than Falcon was.”
Falcon slowly opened an eye to look at Duke, curious despite himself, “yes?” He thought for a moment, “I think I passed that somewhere around the turn of the century.”
The older engine stared at the tracks in front of him, “I don't think the Lady will allow another Sodor Railway to fall, not now. Not after everything that has happened.”
Sir Handel winced as he often did when the Lady was brought up, while Caomhnóir said she had long forgiven him the things he had said in those dark years between the fall of the Mid-Sodor and Dukes recovery, that she had in fact never held them against him, he had not forgiven himself for doubting her. He truly doubted he ever would.
“I agree “ he said heavily, “if our world is to fall, Sodor would be the last.”
“Which means…there will come a day where I will have been here longer than I was on the Mid-Sodor.”
Sir Handle starred. Duke was, in many ways, the embodiment of the Mid-Sodor, the good parts of it anyway. The idea that he could be a Skarloey engine longer than he was a Mid-Sodor engine…
“That just…feels wrong.” He admitted.
Duke nodded, “it's a few years off yet…but it is coming. I do not know how to feel about it.”
Sir Handel thought for a moment, “... Nothing will change if we ignore it for now, so I'm not dealing with this right now,” and closed his eyes to go back to his dozings.
Duke chuckled, closing his eyes as well, “perhaps you have the right of it Sir Handel, perhaps you might.”
