One thing to note about Clive Spong's illustrations in Jock the New Engine is that several are reminiscent of illustrations by Peter Edwards in Small Railway Engines. I think this is a neat detail.

“Here he comes.” Donald whispered.

“Aye, an he’s got young Jock with him as well.” Douglas replied.

The two miniature engines crept up the transfer tower, unaware of the Scottish twins watching their every move.

“Are you sure Rex?”

“Yes! I still see the bags here, how did they not…”

“Now Douggie!” Donald shouted, and Douglas quickly reversed, the line from his coupler to the bags on the tower yanked taunt.

“Wait!” Rex yelled in panic.

Jock wisely just closed their eyes.

POOOF

A pink cloud detonated out from around the tower, coating everything and everyone around it.

When the dust had settled it revealed two newly pink miniature engines sat atop the tower. The yard was silent for a long moment before all the trucks and wagons began cackling.

“Well, well, well.” Donald chuckled as the twins pulled alongside the tower, “would you look at that Douggie, I say those two wear pink quite well, don't you say.”

“Aye they do Donal, it suits them quite nicely if I do say so myself.”

Jock cracked open their eyes, “does it really?”

“Aye, see for yerself.”

Donald's driver pulled out a mirror, allowing the small 2-6-2 to see their new paint work.

“So I do! I have to say I quite like it. Pink really…what's that noise?

The noise was Rex’s teeth grinding together.

The Scottish twins just laughed.

“You’ll have tae do better than that to get one over on us,” Donald chortled.

Rex’s face was a red as Mike's boiler

“Dinnae worrie yerself to much Rex,” Douglas chimed im, “it'll wash right off…eventually.”

The twins rolled off leaving an amused Jock, and a plotting Rex.
