These amazing Dahlia cultivars were adding drama to a small front garden in Kirkwall, Orkney. There was a pink pompom Dahlia and a vibrant cactus type with the typical double blooms, with very narrow petals from the tip to the base.

In a small community garden at Dunkeld, Scotland, the colourful Corydalis solida subsp. solida 'Beth Evans' was producing a display of sugar-pink flowers. This tuberous perennial produces fern-like foliage that will die back by the end of spring.

In several gardens and nursery displays there were examples of Roscoea purpurea. This plant is an upright, deciduous tuberous perennial from the Himalayas, particularly Nepal. The clump of leafy stems produce these orchid-like flowers later in the season, ideal for this autumnal Royal Horticultural Society Chelsea Flower Show, London.

Eremurus stenophyllus (narrow-leaved foxtail lily) flowers arise from the fleshy, starfish-like roots of this herbaceous perennial along with a clump of strap-shaped leaves. These plants require fertile, sandy, well-drained soil conditions with protection from the wind. Here the flowers are sheltered between the glasshouse ranges of Cambridge Botanic Garden, UK.
