This is a Sheaffer Valiant Tuckaway Marine Green celluloid Vacuum-Fil fountain pen and twist action pencil set c. 1947. The pen is about 4 1/2 inches long and the pencil is about 4 3/16 inches long. The pen’s barrel is actually alternating color and clear celluloid strips so that the ink level can be seen by the user. It is a Vacuum-Filler that is intended to work by unscrewing the end cap, pulling out the plunger, putting the nib in ink and pressing the plunger down once. The barrel is stamped W. A. SHEAFFER PEN CO. over FORT MADISON, IOWA U.S.A. over MADE IN U.S.A over 1250, indicating the original price was $12.50. It features a two-tone Triumph conical palladium (or platinum) masked 14 karat gold nib stamped SHEAFFER'S over LIFETIME over REG. U.S. PAT. OFF. over MADE IN U.S.A. over 14K. The pencil’s cap is stamped SHEAFFER'S over MADE IN U.S.A over PAT’D IN U.S.A. over 500, indicating the original price was $5.00. The trim on both is gold filled. The Sheaffer White Dot appears on the top of the cap of the pen. The pencil does not have a White Dot. In 1947 the Valiant Tuckaway came in black, brown, marine green, grey and carmine. There was also a matching Stratowriter ballpoint pen that came only in black and sold for $10.00. This is a Sheaffer Triumph Lifetime Tuckaway Vacuum-Fil fountain pen in Black celluloid c. 1942-1945. This 4 3/8 inch long pen fills by unscrewing the barrel end cap, pulling out the plunger (as shown), inserting the nib into ink and pushing in the plunger with one stroke. This creates a vacuum that sucks ink into the barrel ink chamber. Note the stripes in the barrel. They were made of alternating solid and translucent strips. It came in Black, striped Golden Brown, striped Green, and striped Carmine with gold filled trim and Black and Gray with chrome plated trim and sold for $12.50. A matching pencil sold for $4.00. The gold filled cap band is 7/8 inches wide. The pen is clipless, a feature Sheaffer advertised that because of its large feed it did not need to be pocketed with the nib pointing up making it convenient to "tuck away" in a pocket or purse. The Bexley Tuck-Away is a “long-short” style pen that is only 4 1/4 inches long capped but with the cap threaded onto the end of the short barrel it becomes 7 1/2 inches long posted. It was made in both fountain pen and rollerball pen versions and due to the compact size of the barrel the fountain pen can only accept short international cartridges. No converter was provided even as an option. This uncatalogued Bexley Tuck-Away is made of a colorful version of the Cracked Ice acrylic resin called Mardi Gras in a mix of green, purple, and orange.

Sheaffer Tuckaway Vacuum-fil Autograph pen and pencil set c1946-1947. The full name of the pen was the Triumph Tuckaway For Your Autograph. The cap and barrel are made of Black Radite and the pen is fitted with a solid 14 karat gold Triumph nib. The clip and 9/16 inch cap band are hallmarked 14K. Made in both lever and vacuum-fil versions originally selling for $20 and the matching pencil was $15. Autograph Tuckaways are probably the most difficult black Sheaffer Autograph pens to find. Tuckaways aren't as generally popular with collectors. This Sheaffer Tuckaway Autograph Vacuum-fil pen and pencil set c1946-1947 was featured as the cover shot of the Spring 2006 Pennant.
