This is a Sheaffer Triumph Lifetime Vacuum-Fil fountain pen in Golden Brown celluloid c. 1942-1945. Sheaffer’s 1942 sales sheet states that these pens would be offered as both lever and vacuum-fil types. Sheaffer announced the pen to dealers in January 1942 after four years of development. This pen introduced one of Sheaffer's iconic nibs, the Triumph sheath point, a conical 14 karat gold platinum plated two-tone nib. Because of World War II, production was limited as Sheaffer shifted much of its manufacturing to military parts to support the war effort. This 5 1/8 inch long pen fills by unscrewing the barrel end cap, pulling out the plunger, inserting the nib into ink and pushing in the plunger with one stroke. This creates a vacuum that sucks ink into the barrel ink chamber. Note the stripes in the section and barrel. They were made of alternating solid and translucent strips. It came in Black, striped Golden Brown, Green, and Carmine with gold filled trim and Black and striped Gray with chrome plated trim and sold for $12.50. A matching pencil sold for $5.00. This 4 3/8 inch long pen fills by unscrewing the barrel end cap, pulling out the plunger (as shown), inserting the nib into ink and pushing in the plunger with one stroke. This creates a vacuum that sucks ink into the barrel ink chamber. Note the stripes in the barrel. They were made of alternating solid and translucent strips. It came in Black, striped Golden Brown, striped Green, and striped Carmine with gold filled trim and Black and Gray with chrome plated trim and sold for $12.50. A matching pencil sold for $4.00. This creates a vacuum that sucks ink into the barrel ink chamber. Sheaffer transitioned from the rather pointy ended Triumph pens made from 1942 to early 1945 to the more rounded post war pens in 1945 which started appearing in Sheaffer ads by August 1945. The pen is about 5 1/8 inches long capped and sold for $12.50. A matching pencil sold for $5.00. The 9/16 inch wide cap band and spring loaded clip, a new feature with these more rounded pens, are gold filled. The barrel is stamped W. A. The pen fills by unscrewing the barrel end cap, pulling out the plunger, inserting the nib into ink and pushing in the plunger with one stroke. This creates a vacuum that sucks ink into the barrel ink chamber. Sheaffer transitioned from the rather pointy ended Triumph pens made from 1942-1944 to the more rounded post war pens in 1945 which started appearing in Sheaffer ads by August 1945. The pen is about 5 1/8 inches long capped and sold for $17.50. A matching pencil sold for $6.00 and a matching Stratowriter ballpoint pen sold for $12.50. The cap is stamped 1/10 14K GOLD FILLED – MADE IN U.S.A on the back edge of the cap lip. The clip is spring loaded, a new feature with these more rounded pens. It has a firm gold nib stamped SHEAFFER’S over LIFETIME over REG. U.S. PAT. OFF. over MADE IN U.S.A. over a number. The barrel is stamped W. A. SHEAFFER PEN CO. over PAT. AUG. 25 08 FORT MADISON, IA. U.S.A over DEC. 10 12 JAN. 27 - OCT 20 - NOV. 24 14. The ball clip is stamped SHEAFFER’S and is positioned nearly even with the cap top. The cap top has the White Dot inlay in the center. This model has a retail price of $7.50 in the 1928 catalog. Matching propel-repel-expel pencils were $4.25 in 1928. This is a Sheaffer Lifetime model J8C oversize long fountain pen in unbreakable Jade Green Radite c. 1927-1928. It’s a 5 1/4 inch long lever filling pen with gold filled trim and two cap bands. The 1928 Sheaffer catalog shows 5-30 and 7-30 models with two cap bands while Lifetime pens are shown with one single wide cap band. From 1927 to 1929 Sheaffer advertisements in major magazines such as The Saturday Evening Post only show single band pens. Enough two cap band Lifetime, 7-30, 5-30 and cut out Demonstrator models exist to indicate this cap type was tried for a brief period. It has a firm gold nib stamped SHEAFFER’S over LIFETIME over REG. U.S. PAT. OFF. over MADE IN U.S.A. over a number. The barrel is stamped W. A. SHEAFFER PEN CO. over PAT. AUG. 25 08 FORT MADISON, IA.
