On learning of her accession as the queen of England Elizabeth Tudor quoted Psalm 118, saying: “This is the Lord’s doing, and it is marvelous in our eyes.” Elizabeth was expressing her thanks to God for preserving her life for this elevation after the troubled and dangerous events of her childhood and early youth. This quote also proved prophetic for her queenship, which became indeed ‘marvelous’. Declared an illegitimate child, at some time nearly deprived of any chance of ever succeeding to the throne, a woman and an unmarried queen, – despite these difficulties and what was seen as weakness, she managed to resolve and mitigate the first and turn the second to advantage. As her contemporaries remarked, Elizabeth was as both king and queen, and with her strong political and diplomatic sense and a talent of state governance her reign became not merely successful, but worthy of being called glorious.
