i think this quote sums up the entire core issue of not just cheating in uni but also a huge trend i've noticed in online spaces where people don't bother to do literally anything anymore

i'm on a few film photography subreddits and yesterday i saw someone post a photo of a camera with an extremely large front plate containing the camera's make and model and the OP was asking "hey can anyone tell me what this camera is?" like... they couldn't even read those words and type them into google to see what comes up (which would have led them directly to a wiki page on the camera) they literally went straight to reddit and wanted everyone else to do it for them

this is a further extension of the same issue, which is that the younger generation is being taught by these things to have literally zero ability to think critically and problem solve

There’s also been a massive increase in ‘Petahexplainsthejoke’ posts reaching the front page of Reddit, and it’s almost always incredibly basic context-based humour.

And for what it’s worth, I feel it’s different from the ‘Explain Like I’m Five’ subreddit. It’s a total lack of interest in wanting to sit with something and think for more than a couple of seconds.

ChatGPT 3.5 was released November 30, 2022. It was an enormous leap forward for NLP in some ways but it was indeed only 3 years ago, and the fervor wasn't immediate. Until it has demonstrated usability for more things the majority of it being "here to stay" is just hype over a corporate fad. It's "here to stay" insofar as the tech can't be suppressed, but the forcing of it into everything is a corporate fad. Eventually the bubble pops and only the actually-useful applications will be left, and while some likely exist the majority will prove to have been hype.

Machine Learning and AI (as the term meant three years ago) are here to stay and indeed have been integrated for decades, though Big Data was a related corporate fad that was previous to the AI fad. Transformers obviously have proven uses (AlphaFold) and will be used for decades more, especially when specialized to the relevant task. But AI (as in the corporate term typically referring to LLMs used in a general manner) is mostly-unproven prototypes being integrated into everything with an obvious lack of care for the problem supposedly being solved by it and for reliability and user experience, and this alone should make it clear that it's a bubble, a fad, a hype train.

Whether it's here to stay for most things is based on whether it successfully improves fast enough to be useful and reliable and cheap enough. It may be able to do that - it is improving, hence the continued investment - but the biggest hype is ultimately based on the assumption it keeps doing so ~indefinitely instead of plateauing. That's the bull case, and people who believe it will see others claiming it hasn't improved at all and sneer. Meanwhile the bear case is based on looking at the claims and what is being presented, and noting the obvious massive gap, and also noting that it's incredibly unclear what the economics are - how much tokens cost, and how useful those tokens are, and how much people will pay for them. Only the big LLM producers know the first, and they *don't* know what future/better/"good enough" tokens will cost, and *no one* really knows the second two, and bc of venture capital and the attempts to gain a monopoly on the best tokens, API costs aren't even necessarily trustworthy as an estimate, imo. The quality of given types of tokens (which LLM generates them determining the "type") isn't easily quantifiable, even. It's all one giant entirely-unsettled bet. Basically nothing about the future of AI/LLMs is certain, except of course that whatever Musk says will be wrong.

Translation: In 2022, ChatGPT got waaay better than it had been in previous versions, which took some time to find a use for. They still don't actually have many good uses for it at the moment, and unless that somehow drastically changes, the "here to stay" mantra is just corporate propaganda. Most likely outcome is that the bubble pops, leaving behind the AI in places where it's actually useful. [See also: the Dot Com bubble.]

AI as it is is half-baked and shitty at what corpos are trying to make it do, and the lone fact that they're forcing it so hard without giving a shit about the user experience makes it clear that it's all just hype.

Whether it's "here to stay" depends on whether it improves fast enough and becomes cheap enough for the companies to justify continued investment. It is currently improving at a rapid rate, and therefore might reach the tipping point if progress doesn't plateau, and the pro-AI group sees this and is betting on that advancement continuing past the tipping point.

The group that thinks the bubble is due to pop soon is looking at how opaque the AI companies are about their financials and the huge gap between what the companies claim AI can do and what it's actually capable of. Nobody really knows yet how much AI is going to be worth to the end user, or how much that changes with the quality of the replies.

Basically nothing about the future of AI/LLMs is certain, except of course that whatever Musk says will be wrong.
