Unattainable - Little Joy

The beach was glimmering this evening, just as it had every day since Logan had come to Meria. He’d never seen such deep blue water, such crystalline sparkles from the glassy horizon back home. The beach was something to be walked over, photographed in front of, but not really looked at. This was totally different. Even though he had only planned on spending a day or two in the city, the fairy prince had found himself finishing up a whole week just staring at the water with the girl who’d saved his life. Brenda sat beside him on the shore with a complacent smile. She was used to this, of course, but Logan always found himself surprised by just how dazzling it was.
"It’s really….it’s incredible," he said softly, not tearing his eyes away for a moment. "I can see how people would be drawn to this place. There’s nothing like it in this region, I can say that for sure."
Brenda gave a soft smile and sat forward, her damp hair resting against her toned shoulders. “I know. There’s a whole other world out there, but I could never call anywhere else home like I do this view.”
Logan paused to think this over. Did he think of Stella as home? Sure, of course, but over the years, he’d strayed away from the grit of what the name “Stella” meant to him. Everyone was so superficial, so self-absorbed, so disoriented with the history…it was a shame. Hardly any natural beauty remained in the neon city at all, and even less people who sought it out.
"I think I understand what you mean. Being able to come down here every day and just be a part of the city…it’s kind of amazing."
Brenda shook her head slightly, “Not just the city. The world itself! The ocean is incredible, but Meria can’t take all the credit for it. It was here far before our little city was. We just appreciate it, that’s all.”
Logan pondered this for a long time, his eyes never waning from the cleft of sunlight falling behind the water. At first, he didn’t even notice the girl pick up her ukulele and start to gently strum. Something about her song was just so peaceful. A little somber, a little wistful, but ultimately, a beautiful way to finish off another beautiful day. In a way, he wondered if Brenda ever felt like leaving. He found it difficult to imagine walking away from all of this natural beauty, all of this water, but in some ways, maybe other people thought the same way about the bright lights of Stella. Maybe the wistfulness they all felt was because they were looking for something else, something new they had never felt or seen before. Yes…Logan could relate to that thought. Something he’d never felt before….
"If only songs were sung to guide the doubtful one beyond the rough, where not much is good enough."
Logan layed back quietly, letting her gentle strums wash over him.
"If you find yourself amongst the lonely ones, I will be waiting here with open arms. I can’t coerce you into this one. Jealousy, lay all your spells to bed. I’ll choose ‘unloved’ instead."
Logan had closed his eyes as the song finished. His baby blues batted open after a few moments of silence, and he sat up, looking at her with unkempt coils of bubblegum pink hanging in his face.
"Did you write that?"
Brenda took a moment to quietly sigh before smiling over.
"Yeah. A while ago."
The splashing of the waves on the seashore filled the gaps in their words. The tan pair merely looked at each other for a few long moments before they turned their eyes back to the water. He didn’t know who that song had been written for, if anyone at all, but it spoke to him in more than just one way. An unattainable goal, a secret, feeling like you’ve lost yourself, and choosing to be unloved.
Yes, Logan could relate to those thoughts. Deep down, despite the silence, he was a little glad someone else could relate to them, too.
