This is really interesting and well phrased!! This is a problem that bothers a lot of non-scientists I feel ;u; one point: necessary simplification leads to unavoidable abstraction, surely?. Abstraction is the *consequence* of an attempt to simplify
I suppose that’s how you define abstraction, which funnily enough, kind of is on topic haha
What I mean by that is, if you have a concept in your head that you want to communicate and you’re not sure how, you’ll spend a few minutes ruminating on it in order to find the right words...but they still won’t quite explain the exact nature of your feeling or thought because the words are secondary and don’t capture the non-lingual aspects of your experience. In that case, the thought is the more abstract aspect, not necessarily something that is “real” or “exists” until a definition is assigned to it
But by the same token, trying to simplify or explain a real or concrete thing would mean abstracting it--like if I tried to explain what the table I’m sitting at looks like, the simplification becomes the more abstract thing
So, in that sense, both are true haha and also a solid demonstration that words are poor conductors of meaning
