here’s the deal, snacks
so i know it’s really really frustrating for your favorite author to take ABSOLUTELY FOREVER to update their fics. as both a fanfiction reader and writer myself, i am very familiar with the agony of seemingly-endless hiatuses, WIPs that have been WIPs for years, and of course the guilt and pressure that inevitably comes with updating really slowly.
and i’m not saying that all people who would agree with the above opinions are being pushy or annoying or rude- i understand your struggles. i get it. and sometimes a little encouragement from readers can be really motivating!
but here’s the thing. i feel like some individuals may not realize that most (key word MOST) authors would rather produce fan content that they can actually be proud of, at the expense of updating slowly, than just churn out fics one after the other without worrying about quality.
and yes, i know, it’s all been said before and this is nothing new and fanfiction authors just don’t want to be heckled...except for it’s kind of true. ^^’
so, in conclusion
for fanfiction readers: maybe you don’t care about quality and you just want fast updates. great for you! maybe i’m not the author for you then. maybe you think it’s really important for the author to only write what they’re passionate about and make sure the quality is to their satisfaction. that’s awesome too! there are so many great authors out there (including myself, haha, shameless self-plug) who will be happy to provide that type of fanfiction for you. maybe- and this is the Ultimate Struggle(tm) - you want quality stories and fast updates. if this is the case, NOT ALL HOPE IS LOST. there are authors like this. please just remember that not all people can be this way and try to be understanding/respectful. :)
for fanfiction authors: maybe you like to update as fast as possible and quality isn’t one of your top priorities. great! you’re making tons of people happy. maybe you update every once in a blue moon, because you’re a perfectionist and like to make sure both you and your readers are happy with your work. amazing! i can definitely relate. take your time and do what makes you happy. maybe you don’t care at all and only write for fun. peachy! love that. maybe you’re that one author we all aspire to be- fast updates with a wide variety of excellent stories and plots. GOOD. JOB. YOU’RE DOING SPLENDID. KEEP GOING.
and in the end- I CANNOT STRESS THIS ENOUGH- do what you want to do, whether that may be writing guilty-pleasure oneshots or long, novel-length slow burn fics.
tl;dr: be understanding and respectful. different authors have different creative processes. do what makes you happy.
