Space Jam 2 Thoughts : Spoiler Warning
So apparently a lot of critics hate this movie but audiences are loving it ( it even beat Black Widow on their second weekend!?). And ironically I think the reason why boils down to one of the themes of the movie. Having fun versus being the best/winning.
Lebron’s whole arc is he takes basketball too seriously. Whereas his son Dom while liking basketball, prefers to create video games where basketball can have all new rules and it’s just supposed to be fun. Lebron tried to recruit who he thinks will be the ultimate dream team that will play basketball strictly by the fundamentals. But he’s stuck with the toons. Yet when he realizes he has to play by video game rules rather than basketball rules, it’s when he stops being serious and lets the toons have fun that they stop losing the game. And yet it’s a combination of Bugs learning some fundamentals and Lebron having fun that saves the day.
And look at the villain Al G. Rhythm. He’s literally a computer program. His main objective is to win. To be the best. To be noticed for how great he is. He pretends to be having fun. But it’s not his goal. He’s like certain movies. Technically doing everything right, but if they’re no sense of fun, it’s just soulless.
This movie isn’t a masterpiece by any means. But it is fun. The critics are getting so caught up in the fundamentals of good movie making that they forgot movies are supposed to be fun too. The Looney Tunes have always reminded us not to take life too seriously. It’s why the first Space Jam movie was a hit, and it’s why this one is on the way to becoming one too. Sometimes people just want to have fun.
That said where was the Space Jam song/remix?
