⁣ Canon EOS 250D | 24mm | 1/125s | f/10 | ISO 100⁣ Taken on 23/02/2020.⁣ ⁣ Nestled between the mountains of the Sila and the Ionian coast, the town of Rossano overlooks the surrounding area from a position that has always made it of one Calabria’s important strategic locations.⁣ ⁣ This is a fascinating place of ancient origins, in an area rich in contrasts between rugged mountains inland facing a coastline of fine white sand.⁣ ⁣ Presumably, Rossano was founded by the Oenotrians, and thereafter the town underwent several rules: Roman, Byzantine, Norman and Spanish, while maintaining its own cultural independence.⁣ ⁣ Rossano's most important historical period is the Byzantine: from 540 to 1059. In fact, it became a strategic centre of the Byzantium empire, among the most active and confident of Southern Italy, coveted by numerous invaders but never conquered.⁣ ⁣ In addition, Rossano is home to the Codex—one of the oldest existing gospels in the world that is extremely valuable and unique due to its beautiful miniatures, masterpiece of Byzantine art.⁣ ⁣ 𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝘁𝗼 𝗴𝗲𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲:⁣ ⁣ If you're in Reggio Calabria or Taranto, take the Intercity Train to Rossano. There's simply no other castle like it (although it does remind me in some ways of the Aragonese Castle in Taranto in the southeastern region of Puglia).⁣ ⁣ If this landmark existed in the UK, you can bet your bottom dollar that there would be swamps of tourists all year round. Not here. And that's Calabria's charm — the 'wild west' as I like to call it.⁣ ⁣ 𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝘁𝗼 𝗴𝗲𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲:⁣ ⁣ To get to this one-of-a-kind and yet-to-be-discovered beach resort, catch a bus from the bus station in Crotone with the company Romano, which offers a Monday–Saturday service. ⁣ Canon EOS 250D | 22mm | 1/3200s | f/5 | ISO 100⁣ Taken on 23/02/2020.⁣ ⁣ Calabria is known as the cradle of 'Magna Graecia' – the name given by the Romans to the coastal areas of Southern Italy – and is a land of ancient settlements and archaeology dating back centuries.⁣ ⁣ Here about 10km from the port city of Crotone, which used to go under the name of 'Kroton', is the Capo Colonna Archaeological Park.⁣ ⁣ You feel like you have struck gold when you enter this blissfully quiet and yet historically significant cape that houses archaeological excavations, a lighthouse, a medieval tower, a charming white sanctuary and – to top it all off – a single Doric column facing the sea.⁣ ⁣ This golden artefact, which was part of a magnificent Greek temple called 'Juno Lacinia' from the 6th century B.C., is said to be one of "the most splendid structures in Southern Italy". ⁣ Canon EOS 250D | 67mm | 1/1250s | f/5 | ISO 100⁣ Taken on 23/02/2020.⁣ ⁣ * Repost *⁣ ⁣ There is a bitter-sweet element to this photo.⁣ ⁣ Starting with the bitter: After taking the Intercity train from Crotone to Corigliano Calabro, I was waiting for the IAS bus which, as it transpired, didn't show up 😕.⁣ ⁣ Granted, public transport services are generally limited (or non-existent) on Sundays and public holidays, but the up-to-date bus timetable found on the IAS website does include a Sunday and public holiday service.⁣ ⁣ Not to be deterred – and this is the sweet bit – I got as close as I could to Corigliano Calabro until the pavement ended and, lo and behold, a photo that I'm tremendously proud of given the circumstances.⁣ ⁣ This medieval village majestically stands on a hill surrounded by green olive trees. At the very top you can see the castle which was built as a medieval fortress in the 11th century and underwent a series of transformations.⁣ ⁣ It would have been nice to view the castle and historic centre much more closely, but I believe in focusing more on the positive and less on the what-ifs.⁣ ⁣ At least Calabria lives up to its reputation for being doubly difficult to get around by 🚍 and 🚉.⁣ ⁣ 𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝘁𝗼 𝗴𝗲𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲:⁣ ⁣ The only way to reach Corigliano Calabro's historic centre is by taking a bus from the train station which is on the Taranto–Reggio Calabria Intercity and Sibari–Catanzaro Lido Regional lines.⁣ ⁣ Definitely check the up-to-date bus timetables on iasautolinee.com and search for 'Orari Linea Corigliano'. Canon EOS 250D | 50mm | 1/100s | f/9 | ISO 100 Taken on 23/02/2020. Rossano is a fascinating town steeped in history, nestled between rugged mountains inland and the coastline of fine white sand. Because of this, as well as its altitude at 270 metres above sea level, Rossano has always been one of Calabria's important and strategic locations. It's hard to find a historical town that was ruled by as many dynasties as Rossano; it was founded by the Oenotrians – an ancient population who inhabited a territory from Paestum (in the southern region of Campania) to southern Calabria (the toe of Italy's boot) – and then by the Romans, the Byzantines, the Normans and the Spanish. In the height of its power and reputation, Rossano used to be known as the "Byzantine Pearl". It's therefore unsurprising that the historical centre of Rossano boasts many important treasures like the Cathedral of Maria Santissima Archiropita, the Palazzo San Bernardino, and various little oratories. The most important treasure, however, has to be the Codex Purpureus Rossanensis — one of the oldest existing gospels in the world and listed by UNESCO. It's an extremely valuable artefact because it contains beautiful parchment sheets with magnificent miniatures — a masterpiece of Byzantine art. The Codex dates back to around the 5th and 6th centuries, but amazingly it wasn't discovered until 1879. You can see the Codex for yourself in the 'Museo Diocesano e del Codex', just behind the cathedral. You are shown a video detailing the origins of the Codex as well as an incredible insight into some of the parchments, including the entire Gospel of Matthew.
