Shelly De Killer - hiding in plain sight
Two facts:
1. Despite the line of stitches running down his face, and his generally unique appearance, Phoenix is unable to recognise John Doe the butler as the bellboy from the hotel that takes Maya. This, as nearly every LPer points out, is objectively ridiculous.
2. Miles Edgeworth isn't able to see the sigils on the ice cream seller's jacket and recognise them as De Killer's trademark despite knowing very well that it is and even identifying it as such on De Killer's business card. This is also objectively ridiculous.
It has to be deliberate, a 'bit', a 'running gag', a conceit of the De Killer character. Here's a character with an intentionally highly distinctive design, so much so that he's clearly identifiable as a radio. Who even wears a monocle anyway? Attached to his earlobe?
Yet our heroes (neither of whom are particularly stupid or unobservant) aren't able to recognise him at sight. Even when he goes so far as to wear his logo. Because he's a super secret assassin, a master of disguise. They can't see what they're looking at. He's just that good.
In other words it's a way of showing the De Killer character's chameleon-like abilities not literally but ironically. Which is also funny.
Well I think it is.
