Ch 172 - Duke Diarca talks to Baron Durmand about Apeto events and is angry at Kachian. Mentions on how Kiolle's reputation is improving as a side effect of the oath making him shut up lol

Phew, and after this is the start of the Nelarn/Forest arc which is going to be even longer oops.

Okay first of all I just wanna squeal about how Kishiar discovers Yuder's sweet tooth. In Ch 110 it was mentioned Kishiar got a lot of cakes as insincere gifts from nobles so he plated a lot of them in front of Yuder so they could share. And then Yuder just eats...and keeps eating...it's casually mentioned he's on his fifth plate of cake. AND HE STILL KEEPS GOING. It's sooo understated until the very end when:

Kishiar waved with a smile. Unaware of Ever's slightly trembling eyes as she noticed the heap of empty dishes on the table, Yuder left the residence. (Ch 112)

YUDER CASUALLY ATE EVERY SINGLE CAKE.

And obviously Kishiar noticed this so he brings Yuder more cake the next time they talk in chapter 125-126 when he casually just drops a ton of cake in front of yuder:

After setting down a cup of tea in front of Yuder, Kishiar also placed a plate with as many as five pieces of cream cake.

And Yuder questions it but ultimately just eats it all

Yuder realized that the conversation had reached its end, and he gently placed his fork on the now empty cake plate. A faint smile played on Kishiar's face. "You cleaned your plate... You must really like sweets, huh?" "I've told you before, I neither particularly like nor dislike them." Although his comment wasn't particularly funny, Kishiar, for some reason, held back a chuckle with pursed lips.

Hypothesis confirmed! Thus Kishiar continues to give him sweets to the point that Yuder starts questioning it in ch 141 (but he still eats it)

The cake placed in front of them was a rich chocolate cake, with golden powder sprinkled on top and a sweet scent wafting from the white cream. Yuder clenched his lips towards the cake and reluctantly picked up his fork. 'He seems to be feeding me these things for some reason... He wouldn't be misunderstanding something, would he?' Looking up, he saw Kishiar smiling as usual. In the end, Yuder stood up only after he had eaten all the cake that had filled the large plate.

It's sooo cute. Kuyu confirmed in a Q+A that Yuder doesn't have any change of facial expression when eating these cakes to indicate he likes them, he's just dead panned putting down piece after piece but Kishiar noticed Yuder always cleaned his deserts whereas other food Kishiar has recommended in the past were not as touched. So he tested more types of sweets and was happy to find Yuder eats desserts well.

Also I want to note that Kanna points out Yuder wasn't feeling well near his manifestation bc Yuder normally eats 10+ pieces of bread at the cafeteria but he wasn't eating as much recently.

“But you ate less than usual. I mean, you're the person who recently ate more than ten pieces of bread, but today you only had three. Couldn’t sleep well?” (Chapter 143)

I love how everyone who cares about Yuder keeps a close eye on his appetite!! Also wow cafeteria must be busy because it's mentioned how much of an appetite awakeners have several times.

Yuder and Kishiar have such good conversations this chapter too. This one was one of my favorites:

"I don't think it's reckless if it's something the Commander is doing." At those words, Kishiar was silent for a moment. After a pause, the corners of his lips drew a graceful arc upward. "Sometimes, I feel like you're a tempting demon who came to tempt me." "Temptation, you say?" When Yuder questioned in disbelief, Kishiar let out a low chuckle. "You keep on saying sweet words." "When did I ever?" "Now." "I didn't mean to flatter. What I'm trying to say is..." "I know. No need to explain." Looking at Yuder, who was frowning as if trying to gloss over the situation with a joke again, Kishiar murmured with a smile. "It's strange. I, who have always learned to doubt myself, when you speak in such a manner, feel baselessly reassured that what I am doing is moving along the right path." "...That's because it is actually moving in the right direction." "See. There you go again." Saying that, Kishiar leaned his chin on his hand and exhaled with a small laugh. His staring red pupils seemed to pierce through Yuder's soul. "How fascinating. I wonder where someone like you came from." "..." "From the start, you were like that. You've always had an inexplicable conviction, as if you already knew where my journey was headed." At the unfamiliarly low voice, Yuder momentarily hesitated. He could vividly feel Kishiar's gaze slowly scanning him from his face to his toes. He looked away to avoid reacting to the gaze, but still, his voice penetrated clear and unescapable into his ears. "I wish I could be the one to answer your inexplicable conviction."

(Chapter 140)

Kishiar just is fascinated by Yuder's seemingly blind faith in him and wants to know where it comes from and live up to it. NOW WAIT TELL HE FOUNDS OUT WHERE HIS JOURNEY HEADED IN 1TL AND WHAT HE DID TO YUDER AND HOW SOMEHOW YUDER STILL LOVES THAT KISHIAR T_T

OKAY ONTO THE REAL YAP: FIRST TIMELINE REFERENCES

Apparently Yuder's memory issues made him forget who gave him the name Yudrein until this flashback!! (Also the novelingua TL says "Yudrain" but author confirmed in a QnA that it's spelled Yudrein so that's how I'm spelling it, makes more sense to me since there's an E in Yuder). I can't believe yuder forgot this but i also can't believe i forgot yuder forgot this so fair enough

During his manifestation Yuder remembers the night in 1TL where Kishiar sleeps with him on his last day at the arcane legion. It's the dead of night and Kishiar is touching him with his BARE HANDS!!

As all the strength left Yuder's body, the hand that had been holding his waist moved slowly, caressing his stomach and chest. The touch was gentle, as if trying to soothe a child to sleep, but it was too affectionate to be seen as just that. ...Come to think of it, it was bare. His muddled mind suddenly realized that the hand touching him was not, as it usually was, covered by a glove. The surprise came to him late. Was there ever a day when the man who always wore gloves except in pitch darkness, acted this way? He wanted to look at the state of the hand caressing him, but just as he tried to lower his head, a nip at the soft skin behind his ear sent his thoughts scattering. (Chapter 165)

This just hits so much harder with the context that Kishiar has been touch starved since childhood because he was afraid of hurting people with his unstable vessel, and even moreso later on because of his hand injury but since this is Kishiar's last night with the Arcane Legion and with Yuder he was desperate enough to touch Yuder with bare skin in the dead of night!! IM CRYING!!!!!!!!

I WILL NEVER RECOVER FROM 1TL KISHIAR!!!!!

Also devastated by this line:

As Yuder shook and shivered, the caressing hand became more audacious. Though it was a familiar touch, perhaps due to the fading consciousness of the dream, it felt strange and peculiar, as if he was experiencing it for the first time. Yes, there was a time when he experienced such a moment. After the man behind him had died, there was not once when he felt anything other than repulsion at the touch of another, but there had certainly been a time when he clenched his teeth in excitement, a weak thrill bubbling within him as another touched his body.

Yuder really is Kishiar-sexual. He became touch starved in his own way after Kishiar left huh T_T

Im also loving how Yuder slowly realizes that Kishiar is someone who actually can control himself during Yuder's heat and there must have been another factor in 1TL. Which there was...the injury and instability...Kishiar can't pull the magic boner suppression so easily there :(

And you can sense the newfound (or newly rediscovered?) respect Yuder has for Kishiar after this event in this line:

'...Now that I think about it, I felt something like this before.' An emotion that had been buried in the darkness after the accident caused by the manifestation. Yuder realized the name of the sensation that had returned after 11 years. It was the blind fascination he felt when looking at the back of a shining being.

Ahhh Yuder, 1TL really fucked up and complicated such a pure feeling huh?

And I made a post about it already but I'm going to reiterate. It made me cackle when Kishiar told Yuder the contents of Lenore's letter that Yuder got caught in TWO WHOLE GAY AFFAIRS (with Kiolle and Kishiar) TO RETRIEVE and Yuder went "oh it's a good thing I retrieved the letter before it became a problem then" only for KIshiar to confess that he just gave it back to Kachian and let it be a problem anyways lmaoo. It worked out though, fuck Kachian.

Every reread I hate Kachian a little more. When he appeared and showed interest in Yuder's power during the parade? Gtfo you already used him up and tossed him away and you want to do it again NOPE!! And then during the ceremony he said it brought him joy to see Faria bc he could look down on her (her inevitable downfall being his inevitable rise) what an asshole!!!! I hate him so much!!!!

Also I finally found a single in-story reference to one of their scents and surprisingly it was Kishiar and not Yuder who just had his heat.

His more sensitive than usual sense of smell, as the heat was not fully over, detected a cool scent different from the sweetness of perfume.

This is how Yuder describes Kishiar's scent in chapter 168. Which is in line with what Kuyu has answered in a very early 2021 Q+A about their scents:

A. In the case of phermones, I think it would change a bit depending on emotions and body condition, but the image that I think of most while writing In the case of Kishiar: It feels like a tree that is heavy and cool like a mint or mint when it is crushed In the case of Yuder: It's dry and faint, but it's not easy to recognize/ It feels somehow sweet and bitter like when you pass around a ripe fruit tree. Approximately

Also follow up in 2022:

Q. As when QNA answered the other day, I could tell from the description in the work that Yuder's body scent (pheromone scent) is a ripe fruit tree scent, may I ask what kind of fruit tree fruit it is? A. I wrote that it was the scent of ripe fruit trees, but in fact, it just feels like that, and it is difficult to identify that it is the same or similar to something that already exists in this world, so it seems difficult to confirm with a detailed answer. It is especially true because it varies depending on the condition of the day and the perception of the scent. However, Kishiar once thought it was similar to the scent of ripe grapes when Yuder's desire became particularly strong.

Oh another small thing I didn't remember before is that it was mentioned Yuder's sword is made of Eucalractium ore which is top tier magic material and Ever's combat gloves are actually made of monster-parts so it would be interesting if Ever and Yuder ever fight.

Other minor points of yap that includes spoilers past ch 1300 so don't read if you aren't caught up:

So interesting that the enchanted armor came to help Yuder and Kiolle the moment they needed it...I wonder if it has something to do with it being able to sense traces of Luma's magic on Yuder??

Kishiar mentions that paths appear/disappear at the Palace according to Luma's magic which is amazing that we get forshadowing about Luma's spatial magic this early on

Kishiar setting a new fashion trend of simple yet elegant and telling Yuder this is his preference coming back over a thousand chapters later in Yuder's choice of glass container (chosen bc he thought of Kishiar's tastes) is just making me EMOTIONAL

Turning Theory: Luma implanted an order in Yuder to save the world

Warning: contains spoilers for latest chs (1300s)

So there was a line that bothered me. In Ch 786, Yuder had a conversation with Enon where Enon asked:

“Didn’t you want to come back for revenge? You could have rested instead of joining the Cavalry right away. Why didn’t you think of that?”

And Yuder eventually replies

“I don’t know the reason. It wasn’t anything grand. Maybe it was just the biggest regret of an unfinished task. It’s the same even now.” Yes, it wasn’t a grand reason. The mere thought of having another chance to avert the impending disaster filled him with an involuntary joy. Captivated by that thought, nothing else mattered – not revenge, not emptiness. The newfound opportunity overshadowed everything. “Who asked you to save the world? If nobody believed in you, why go to such lengths?” “...” Well, why indeed? Yuder knew he was not a paragon of virtue. He had used his power for his Commander, for the Empire, for the Cavalry, living without questioning his actions. His sole purpose was what drove and sustained him, and that was no exaggeration. But then, one day, he found himself facing the people crumbling before the disasters striking all over the Empire. During moments when he was engrossed in researching ways to predict and avert these disasters, lost in problems with no apparent solutions. And then, in an almost indescribable sensation, harder even to call instinctual, he felt the onset of destruction amidst those inexplicable disasters. He was seized by an intense feeling, like a tidal wave crashing over him. If there was one single purpose for which his power was meant to be used, he was certain this was it. It was as if a command, etched deep within his heart, had suddenly become clear. This command, its origin unknown, compelled Yuder to rise and move in a direction entirely different from before... That voice... “...Ugh.” Lost in thought, Yuder suddenly furrowed his brow, touching his temple, overwhelmed by a piercing sensation in his head. 'What is this?'

Continuing in the next chapter, it's implied he has a memory he can't recall

"No... Just now, something... I felt like an odd memory I never had was about to surface, but it's gone now." "What was that?" Yuder bit his lip tightly and removed his hand from his head, where the headache had vanished. The strange sensation had surged up naturally the moment he heard Enon's question. The question about why he had strived so hard when no one had asked him to save the world. Yes. There was no such person. Obviously not, but... What was that odd thought that had naturally seeped out of his subconscious?

All this implies there was someone who asked him to save the world. At first I thought it may have been part of his memories with Kishiar that got "pushed" out of him but now it is finally becoming clear who might be behind this memory.

Finally in the latest chapter we learn that Yuder's grandpa was probably possessed by the soul of Luma as he was part of a sect of wizards that were able to receive a "Blessing of the Archmage" where a wizard who dies could be brought back to life miraculously but are implied to be possessed by a diff soul (Luma's). This is an excerpt of a similar accident happening that Kishiar found in historical records:

"Poor Mizere (presumably the name of the wizard who returned from the dead) went completely mad. He said that he knew that he was Mizere, but at the same time, he insisted that he could be someone else, and he said that he knew nothing about it nearly a hundred times a day" - from the diary of the investigator, wizard Anamessimo. Mizere used to talk about magic that he had never heard of before, but they were all magic that was known to have been used by Archmages during the founding era, and in particular, his remarks about 'Space-Linking,' a magic exclusive to Luma, surprised many. This must be why the investigators recorded that he claimed to be an Archmage The investigators at the time seemed to have guessed that the wizard's head had gone blank while he was still breathing (this is how he was described as dead). They used various magics under the pretext of restoring their comrade's memories It is not known exactly, but it seems that several terrible magics that cannot be used now were used. Despite this, the investigators were ultimately unable to find out how the person could have come back to life after death The 'investigation' was concluded after about half a year. That was probably the last time the wizard who had been revived was alive. In the end, the wizards concluded the investigation report by stating that his memories could not be fixed. However, in a personal letter written by a wizard who had investigated the wizard to a friend who became the owner of the Pearl Tower more than 10 years later, there is this sentence: "It's strange, When I think about Mizere, I think that what he was saying might have been true. Is it because it wouldn't be strange if the world were to end soon? If what he said was true, what would another Mizere have done before Mizere? Should we have believed in Mizere and helped him?" The letter's recipient's response was that the world was in disarray these days, so he must be feeling uneasy and should drink and rest. After that, this incident was not mentioned again in the Pearl Tower. However, if it was truly the "Archmage's Blessing" as it was handed down in a certain magic school sect, did the wizard who received the blessing realize something about this world? What did he wish for? Was there another wizard who died and came back to life before? It was an interesting fact that piqued the curiosity of the wizards, but it is now something that cannot be answered (Chapter 1261)

A similar thing happened to Yuder's grandpa who was implied to have died but he miraculously came back to life and saved Yuder and continued to care for Yuder since then.

Since the accident Yuder's grandpa has had weird behaviors such as changed handwriting, jumbled memory, etc similar to the previous case of the "Archmage's Blessing." Kanna even read via his belongings:

“Just like you said, Yuder, it’s someone else. Definitely.” That’s it. “I read someone who is in pain and confusion, who doesn’t remember who they are.” (Chapter 1253)

And notably Yuder remembers his grandpa was always convinced he would do something great. Kishiar thinks it's because Luma may have been able to see into the future and know Yuder would become a powerful awakener - to the point where he specifically prevented Yuder from being a wizard in case that interfered with his awakening:

“Melah Cantinto originally had an excellent eye for magical power. The Royal Magician’s Office selected him based on that ability alone. If that eye had been intact ‘in any situation,’ wouldn’t he have been able to recognize at least one of your potentials as soon as he saw it?” So, perhaps he might have avoided contact with the outside world because he had discovered the extraordinary magical powers that Yuder possessed? Yuder felt quite shocked. It is said that magical powers are almost innate. If there were a wizard around the child who was born, he would be able to immediately see the possibility, but such wizards are not common. Even wizards have different capabilities, so they need to have good eyes to know more clearly, so they needed a certain amount of skill to detect this. However, the grandfather who raised Yuder when he was a baby had this level of eyesight from the beginning. It is said that he never used magic after the acident until he died , but did he really lose all his abilities? If, as Kishiar said, his grandfather's Melah Cantinto's abilities were still intact after the accident, he would have certainly noticed Yuder's magical powers. If that were the case, then it means that he did not tell anyone even though he found out. What is this? It's like... 'It's like he was trying to block my path to becoming a wizard.'

In the end Kishiar concludes:

“As we already know, the Archmage Luma was worried about the disasters that would come repeatedly in the future. In order to prevent that, he tried to find a way to leave a warning that would not be erased for future generations. If the Archmage’s Blessing was part of that method, and if it was true that your grandfather appeared as a result, then so be it.” Kishiar’s voice continued. Yuder couldn’t take his eyes off of the voice as if he was being sucked in. “In the end, he may have accomplished what he wanted. He saved the young hero, who was given new powers like the magic of the old days, and protected him from other dangers until he became an adult.” [...] “I just had a thought. If the Great Wizard Luma tried to break free of the constraints of time and space to warn and help future generations, what would he have done when the magic succeeded?” “…….” “He didn’t try to save the world again himself. So basically Luma took care of Yuder so that he would later save the world, and possibly implanted an order to do so. It wasn't completely to use Yuder as a world-saving tool though as Kanna has read from Melah's belongings that he loved Yuder. Similar to how Enon was also a tool to protect the walls but also loved and cared for. (I love the parallels they really are brothers lmao)

I figure the order is something similar to an oath that Yuder is bound by.

I really do hope we meet Luma again and find out more about it. I feel we definitely will get a flashback of Luma telling Yuder he needs to protect the world...

So there's so many things I noticed this reread that I didn't notice the first time around, most importantly in ch 58 mentioning the origin of divine power

IT WAS ALSO A STONE. I could not believe Kuyu had this hinted at so early and had the gall to tell us it was important

The 1TL flashback at the end of this also killed me!!! Like...

At the unexpected confession, Yuder hesitated, and Kishiar raised his hand, beckoning him closer. Yuder glanced at the luxurious white glove that enveloped his hand, then slowly moved towards him. Frowning at the continuous beckoning, Yuder navigated around a large desk to stand directly in front of Kishiar. This time, a suddenly outstretched hand grabbed his arm and pulled him in. Within moments, Yuder found himself seated on Kishiar's lap, embraced in his arms. ‘...What are you doing? It's broad daylight.’

and SCENTED him and touched his face and yuder was still like "weird but ok"

Yuder endured as Kishiar gently caressed his cheek, knowing it was the only area that had been injured during his duel with the others. ‘That must have hurt quite a bit.’ ‘It wasn't too bad. I've applied some holy water with healing properties, so it should heal soon.’ Because of the smooth leather glove, Kishiar's touch always felt cold. There was only one occasion when it wasn't so. A time when they were together in a room during an invisible night. ‘You seem a little... thinner than before.’ ‘I'm not sure about that.’ ‘Moderate your training a bit. At this rate, we'll need to adjust your uniform before the Commander's inauguration ceremony.’ While he spoke, the hand that had been lightly caressing his rib area through his clothing slipped down to encircle his waist. The breath that had been grazing the top of Yuder's hair while he inhaled and exhaled steadily began to slow and thin. Listening to the slow and deep breathing that sounded as if he was scenting, Yuder let out a quiet sigh, careful not to be heard. There were times when Kishiar returned after stepping away, calling Yuder close to behave as if he was sniffing an animal. Therefore, when he had just called him closer, Yuder had prepared himself for another such event, and he was glad his intuition hadn't been mistaken. Why would he behave this way when he surely knew that Yuder didn't emit any special energy or scent like other second gender manifesters? Despite his curiosity, knowing that he wouldn't receive an answer, he decided not to say anything. Even so, sitting on his lap still felt a bit awkward.

Yuder you def had a scent to Kishiar and he was so into you god you dense dense human i want to strangle you and hug you at the same time.

AND DONT GET ME STARTED ON WHEN THEY TALK ABOUT THE TACTICAL GAME AND SPECIAL PIECE FJSIfje;asfa

Like this piece is the most blatant metaphor for how Kishiar treats yuder and it flies right over yuder's head!! Kishiar shows such blatant favor to Yuder that everyone thinks it is shallow but it isn't ;;

BUT THE PART THAT ABSOLUTELY KILLED ME

'But from the point of view of the special piece, wouldn't it be considered cruel? It's supposed to be a piece that's treated preciously and takes up the most important part of the board, after all.' Yuder doubted for a moment whether Kishiar might be drunk. Was he really saying that the hard stone-made piece used in the game was pitiable? 'Firstly, it's not like we asked for the consent of the piece when choosing the special piece. How to use it is up to the person playing the game.' 'That's true.' 'Knowing that, why are you asking? Did you suddenly develop a fondness for the stone-made pieces?'

I can feel that Kishiar is starting to feel bad for using Yuder, that he "chose" Yuder one-sidedly and then developed feelings that can't be reciprocated bc he knows the weight/cruelty of what he's done ;;

I wish i had more commentary on the rest of what happened in these chapters but the 1TL stuff just completely gripped me and made me forget everything else.

Turning theory on the cyclical nature of the world

Okay so as a follow up to my last post on Luma and Yuder and in light of my recent reread I do have some more Thoughts

For a quick recap, Yuder's actual grandpa died but was revived as Luma through the Archmage's Blessing. We know this blessing has occurred many times in the past but most of the blessing recipients don't actually gain any power besides knowledge, instead Kishiar theorized the blessing is to find and help talented heroes in the future which is exactly what Luma did with Yuder

Enon agrees with this and commented in 1309:

"But someone with such talent, young and inexperienced, without a guardian or wealth, is usually exploited by everyone. I didn't hear the details, but it seems he [Luma] suffered many lifelong wounds back then. Even after preventing the Destruction, he struggled to get along with others, and that time seems to have had a significant impact." [...] "Anyway, the important thing is that it's quite possible that Luma thought finding and assisting another hero was the best way to prevent the impending destruction."

Kishiar also specifically notes Luma kept Yuder isolated despite his immense magical potential - almost as if Luma knew if Yuder stumbled into being a mage it would hinder his awakening (the book has implied before it's harder for someone to awaken if their vessel is already invested in another art hence why it's rarer for priests/magicians/swordsmen to awaken)

How could Luma know about Yuder's future awakening and the red stone?

While in my reread I actually found a very interesting line in chapter 58 when Kanna used her ability to read the scriptures of the sun god:

"...In the beginning, there was a land without light. One day, God took pity on those wandering in the darkness and cast down light. The first light was small and hard, clustered like a pebble... Remember the first sentence well, as it's the most important."

Like holy shit Kuyu, you madman, even telling us this is the most important part all the way in ch 58. It makes it sound like divine power started in the very same way as the red stone - a stone fell and bestowed divine power to certain people

This may be a repeating pattern that happened for magic too (I feel like i vaguely remember some references but I'll update this if I get further into my reread). And it falls in semi predictable intervals depending on the state of the world.

I could see that Luma was able to foresee when and where the red stone would fall, and that Yuder would become a powerful awakener due to him 1) having great potential with a strong vessel unattuned to any current system of magic

2) being very close to where the red stone would fall (may have been a secondary motivation for keeping Yuder in the mountains - heck Luma may have been the one closest to where the magic stone fell that gave wizards the power all those years ago)

A part of me is just amused every few years some meteor hits their world like a god is yeeting them their lifeline for the next few centuries
