Don’t let your past define you. When you’re in a cell for 23 hours a day everything becomes important, like having clean socks. For Juan, growing up in the Southside of San Jose in low income housing, it was easy to get involved with drugs and gangs, since that’s what was around. During a large street fight, Juan recalls feeling that he was punched, only to reach down and realize a screwdriver handle sticking out of his back. At 19, Juan went to prison at San Quentin, where he was a level 4, meaning he only had 30 minutes outside his cell per-day. Juan had a lot of time to himself, which he spent reading and reevaluating what was important to him. Juan decided that enough was enough, that he didn’t want to be a part of the violence anymore, but he felt like he was trapped. He was afraid to leave. On April 17th, 2002 Juan was released and the first thing he wanted to do was to go be with his family. His Aunt wanted to help his process of rehabilitation and offered to take him in while he was on probation; however, Juan knew that if he wanted to change his life, he would have to change his environment. He moved to Phoenix, AZ and bought a nightclub, which is where he would meet his wife, Mirna. Juan and Mirna moved to Bowman, ND to start their lives together and it was there that he focused on being an entrepreneur, delving into real estate development, and also owns both a restaurant with his wife and a hydro testing business. When told of Juan’s past, Mirna’s son Brian didn’t believe what Juan was saying. “Look,” Juan told him, “I grew up in a hard neighborhood. You had to fight for what was yours, no questions asked.” Now Juan fights for forgiveness and righting his wrongs, not letting his past define who he has become. Last night I came across a video on YouTube of Ad-Rock on Sirius’ Blaze45. This led me down a Beastie Boys history and all things MCA YouTube hole for a bit bc I miss MCA. I then came across this documentary about Dock Ellis (Ad-Rock scored), so I just watched it and I think it was meant to be that I see this documentary at this point in my life! I had NO idea about this guy’s life. Don’t give up hope on those around you who might want to give up...press on! Excellent doc.
