Would highly recommend watching Boots based on the novel, The Pink Marine.

A gay 18 year old heads to marine boot camp in the 1990s. Probably some of the best TV I’ve seen in a year or two, got some poignant points and is pretty funny at times.

TV Recommendation: Until We Meet Again

In 1988, two boys fell in love.

Korn was the eldest son and heir of a gangster, who never wanted to be part of his father's empire. The only speck of light in his life was Intouch, a kind and bright boy who wasn't ashamed of who he was or who he loved. No matter what society might say.

But it was the 1980s. And society wasn't so open-minded.

Korn and Intouch's fathers violently opposed their love, culminating in a terrible fight one night. Korn broke, and before anyone could stop him, he took his father's gun and shot himself in the head. Shattered watching the love of his life die, Intouch picked up the gun next and followed his boyfriend into the afterlife.

In present day, Pharm is a very strange young man.

His whole life, he has been plagued by terrifying nightmares where he watches the man he loves kill himself over and over again. Every vision of a happy love ends in blood, and Pharm wakes sobbing, drenched in sweat. Any loud bang- like a car backfiring- can bring about the visions, like waking nightmares.

But Pharm is optimistic, and he always tries to see the brighter side, to push back on the darkness that haunts his dreams.

And then, on his first day at University, he meets Dean.

Dean is a senior, and president of the swim club. Dean's entire life, he has also been plagued with visions. But in his dreams, he sees a lovely and perfect young man that he is never good enough for. But every second of his life, Dean feels a powerful urge to find someone, protect someone... but he doesn't know who.

The second Pharm and Dean lay eyes on each other, their visions become more powerful, and they are positive...

Pharm is the reincarnation of Intouch, haunted by the trauma of watching Korn die.

Dean is Korn, still drowning in his own guilt for leaving first. For abandoning Intouch and their love when all he could see was his own suffering.

Together, Pharm and Dean must find their own love amidst the memories of their past life, and heal the pain that still echoes through the world from Intouch and Korn's lives.

Is 30 years long enough for the world to change?

Can Dean and Pharm heal the pain of their past lives together? Or are they doomed to repeat the past?

Honestly, it's criminal how underrated Pelswick is. As a cartoon created by a disabled cartoonist, it's incredible how pro-disability and anti-ableist it is. The entire moral of Pelswick is essentially 'Treat me like you would a normal person, you weirdos', with it not afraid to delve into the inherent issue with infantilizing disabled people and how some people act all righteous but are really just being performative.

I re-watched "Hear No Evil, PC No Evil" last night (Yes, the PC does indeed stand for 'politically correct') and I don't think it stuck with me that much when I first watched it a couple years ago, but wow. The plot is basically that Pelswick's dad is seeing a supposedly multi-ethnic woman named "Spagna", who turns out to be one of the most infantilizing characters I think I've ever seen on TV. She refuses to see Pelswick as a kid who happens to use a wheelchair, instead acting as if he's helpless and needs everything done for him because he's such a 'poor, helpless' boy. She ends up accidentally 'Sigmund Freuding' herself into calling Pelswick the C-word when he rightfully tells her off for treating him like he's some kind of fucking charity case, then loses her shit because how dare she say the c-word, (like yeah, you shouldn't, but there's a couple of other things you need to work on first, lady) and scrubs her mouth with a soap she conveniently has on hand and leaves the house sobbing. Pelswick's dad immediately says he's breaking up with her after she leaves. Not for the c-word comment, I don't think, but "have you ever seen somebody so PC in all your life?".

I vaguely remember there being another episode where Pelswick got suspended because he refused to make his ventriloquist dummy or whatever they were with a wheelchair because gasp! he sees himself as himself, and doesn't base his whole character and personality on being paralyzed. There was another where he couldn't go on a school field trip to go camping because of his wheelchair, even though Pelswick does snidely remark that he's the only kid who couldn't accidentally get paralyzed.

Not ALL of the episodes involve Pelswick being infantilized though, there's plenty of episodes that revolve around him being a kid and doing dumb kid shit without his wheelchair being brought into question other than it just being there, which I think adds to the point I was trying to make with the three episodes I mention. However, when the subject/issue DOES come up, Pelswick doesn't just nod his head and take it, he ends up giving out various clapbacks (sometimes with the help/vague advice of his guardian angel, Mr. Jimmy) to them. And more likely than not, these people end up outing themselves as being ableist shitheads anyway.

Pelswick does need some aid/help, his house has an elevator installed so he can get to the second floor, and a ramp he can use instead of steps, but that's miles better than just assuming he needs everything done for him.

Anyway, if you enjoy good disabled representation and want a recommendation, watch Pelswick.

TV RECOMMENDATION: Shōgun (2024) Starring: Hiroyuki Sanada, Anna Sawai, and Cosmo Jarvis

"Why is it that only those who have never fought in a battle are so eager to be in one?"

I'd only heard good things, but if someone had told me that this is the closest thing to Game of Thrones at its peak, I would have probably watched it sooner. Great show and binge! No surprise it swept at the recent Golden Globes and Emmys.

All the characters and storylines are a little difficult to follow initially, but once you have the lay of the land, you get a rich story of honor, bravery, and (inconceivable) loyalty; ambition, greed, and betrayal; and also love, wits, and wisdom. Set in 1600s Japan, it's a tug-of-war between politics and religion amongst five regents with a tenuous alliance.

Woojin being fond and exasperated but unfazed by and even proud of Gunwoo’s “heart of a boxer.”

These two really. Their relationship is truly something to die for. Woojin unconditionally supporting Gunwoo’s decision. That soft, knowing smile, knowing that Gunwoo did not and would not betray his ideals. Knowing they deserve to have that money after everything they went through but still being fond and unsurprised as Gunwoo turned it down.

Recall, this is the same guy who risked his life for money inside a safe because there were “billions on the line.”

These two I swear.

Everyone go watch Bloodhounds! You won’t be disappointed.

I'm sure it was you @fiumeikikotoben (maybe you did a rewatch or something?!) but ONE of my beloved mutuals started bloging heaps of stuff from Leverage on my dash, so much that it got to the point where I went, 'hhmm, this actually looks ok, i should check it out!' & now i'm 2 months into a binge watch & completely obsessed with absolutely everything about it!! So thank you for exposing me to a glorious show that i otherwise would have never looked at!!
