The year was 1797. Second son to a Vodou priest and priestess, Jesús Agüeybaná was born into a long line of great Taíno caciques hailing from Borikén [Puerto Rico] and Hispanola [modern day Colombia and Haiti.] His education regarding his familial history began at an early age. The premise of the Bondye and loa were taught and shared with the boy. Reverence was demanded and worship required and as Jesús grew it became obvious he had deep affinity for the both religious and ritualistic practices of the tribe’s beliefs.
The Taíno tradition was one deeply rooted in the practices of Vodou. Founded on the principal belief that humans are spirits who inhabit the visible world. He was expected to protect and share his family’s tradition with his bloodline, to teach those that came after him but it wasn’t until he was introduced to his maternal grandfather that he was presented a practice deeper and darker than what he’d originally been taught. His grandfather, a bokor [sorcerer,] shared the true power of his family’s blood. A servant to the loa - bokor’s used both good and evil to balance the will between that which was seen and unseen. Life and death were powerful tools and the only way to serve the loa completely was to possess the ability to walk in both the natural and supernatural realms.
Sorcerers were appointed and chosen every generation. Jesús’ spirit was seen incapable, tainted by the protestant teachings of his parents, his grandfather, Caguax, a great Cacique, selected his brother as the next bokor to take over the tribe. Selected bokor’s walked in the human world for 25 years before receiving immortality’s kiss. An uprising ended that brother’s life and with Jesús, at the age of 37, being the only remaining son in the bloodline for the generation, was forced into accepting the role.
The ritual was done by a powerful witch with the help of an old vampire, the same one that sired all the previous bokors belonging to Jesús’ clan. In this case, the Alves - the clan which provided the anchor for Jesús’ clan in their ever pursuit to safeguard their heritage, assisted in the rituals. The Alves also served as guide to the Agüeybanás, the link to the dead protector/sorcerer to the visible-human world. In return, the bokor gives the Alves clan his loyalty and protection.
Death and ultimately the turn from witch to vampire created a bridge between both the natural and spiritual. The bokor’s spirit was remanded to the unseen but the body remained in the visible. Bokor’s possessed the ability to call any spirit from the other realm - they could also wield their spirits to walk in the bodies of witches and mediums with an affinity for the spiritual.
Jesús who willed white magic was not a well-known sorcerer but he was talented, more powerful than his brother who was chosen to fill the shoes now he was forced to walk in. But keeping their family’s knowledge and heritage was more important than any personal desires and so he decided to be the best bokor he could ever be. He was a shaman, a healer in his tribe, but also learned a lot about black magic and understood it very well. Many of his clan feared black magic and it was within reasons but he believed that learning it and understanding it would keep them from harms way. He performed exorcism, cast spells for the good of his tribe, and most of all, protect them from any threat by keeping their secrets safe.
The Agüeybanás had always been connected to the Alves. Their bond fluctuate throughout the centuries. It was friendly sometimes hostile but the benefit of their bond outweighed many quarrels they have and so they remained affiliates. Through the Alves, the Bertrands bounded by marriage became a big part of the Agüeybanás as well. As the new bokor for the family, Jesús made his acquaintances with the new Alves alliance. He became a good friend to Serafine and a protector to the witch and the young grandson she took in and raised. Through the years Jesús watched Marcel grew into a curious witch, and he grew fond with the child. When Serafine died, Marcel was left with no family to want and care for him. Jesús then decided to take in the young witch, as a friend, as a progeny. Unknown to Jesús, his connection with the young witch would be more than of a teacher and a student. They became spiritually connected though blood exchange and the vows not only blood bonded them but it tethered their spirits. Jesús spirit can possess Marcel at any time because they are bound/tethered. Marcel keeps him locked in this world. Soon enough, the relationship evolved into something more, deeper, stronger that at one point Jesús believed no one - nothing - could separate them. He was mistaken of course.
Jesús and Marcel came to a castle in Eastern Europe in search of sanctuary. There was an attack on Jesús in an attempt to destroy the bokor. But it wasn’t until Marcel was targeted next in hopes to weaken the bond with Jesús and destroy the vampire witch that Jesús decided they needed to flee. A couple of years in the slave castle and Jesús felt the pull to leave. He did not like the castle and what it did to him. What it did to Marcel. When it was time to select the next generation’s bokor and guide him, he decided to leave. Marcel refused to go with him for reasons unknown at first. But it became clear when it was revealed his progeny and servant had given his blood to another vampire. Marcel felt comfortable in the castle and he was no longer wanted as his Master…
Two years passed, Jesús returned to the castle after sensing his former servant and lover Marcel surrounded by dark magic. He had always feared that the young witch would follow his grandfather’s footsteps and blamed himself for not fully taking charge as the medium’s mentor. He believed he had corrupted the witch by taking him in as a lover instead of a student. He attempted to straight things right, determined to pull Marcel out of the dark but it appeared that this was impossible living in the slave castle. Events that followed including exorcism that led to Marcel being hurt made him decide to take the young man back home to Louisiana. But would things work out between Bokor and medium this time especially when there are much darker forces that lurk in the shadows of their old home?
