I thought this might prove to be a popular story. Okay, for context I went to see Assassins on Valentine's Day with laurencombeferre (and also happened across switchtaire, floretesdecolors & seagreeneyes, because it's a very small world.) And also for context, I walk with a stick, (it's got polka-dots on it and is called Watson, very swish.)
So I noticed Xavier!Booth twiddling his fancy cane during the Ballad of Booth, (especially 'Johnny lived with a grace and glitter / kind of like the lives he lived on stage') because anyone who is required to use a walking stick has at one time or other attempted to do cool tricks with it, and thus I was mightily impressed with how he managed it. At any rate, the show went on. (Excellent as it is. Even if they did announce before the start of the show that because so many cast members were ill that it was going to be a slightly amended version.)
Now, I'm normally abysmal at the stage door, but this time, perhaps because I had something to say, or perhaps because Lauren & I had shared a vodka shot before hand, I actually plucked up the courage and told him that I thought he worked his cane rather well.
He seemed quite pleased by this and then told us about the first time that he saw the show. Obviously with Aaron as John Wilkes Booth, and that on this particular night when they got to the Ballad of Booth Aaron started his grand stick showmanship, and then dropped it halfway through? Apparently Xavier was like is that supposed to happen?
And I know this story is supposed to be about Aaron, but Michael Xavier is just so precious.
