From Worst to Best, here’s the Sonic portrayals that, in my humble opinion, are either stinky, or awesome:
Chronicles Sonic: What happens when you mix Archie Sonic with STC Sonic, then slap the ‘better than Sonic Team’ label onto that? You’d get Chronicles Sonic. Also doesn’t help that this guy got more access as Sonic is primarily a game franchise, not a show franchise.
STC Sonic: Only saved from being dead last because not a load of people know that this Sonic often called Tails ‘Pixel-brain’ and bullied his so-called ‘friends’. Seriously, why even hang out with this arse?
Archie Sonic (Both Pre and Post-Reboot): I’ll admit, IDW Sonic’s Portrayal is colouring my dislike of Archie Sonic’s portrayal, but I can’t help but feel a load of Flynn’s portrayal of Sonic would have happened if Archie Sonic kept going.
SatAM Sonic: If Game!Sonic is a simp for any girl who manages to fluster his jimmies a little bit, SatAM!Sonic is a freaking doormat for his ‘prewcious’ spotlight stealer/co-host Sally Acorn. That ain’t Sonic to me. Sonic would not have let people walk all over him, even if they made his heart go doki-doki like SatAM!Sonic’s heart apparently did for Sally. (I can’t tell most of the time, since they sounded more like siblings whenever they talked to one another than they did love interests)
IDW Sonic: Steven Universe in blue hedgehog form! He’s a malleable as whatever Flynn and Stanley want for that moment in time!
AoStH Sonic: I know the memey thing within my close circle of Sonic friends is to go ‘who?’ at Underground’s Sonic portrayal, but... since I love Underground unironically... I’m going to have to say ‘who?’ to this one. There’s nothing interesting about this guy’s character -- and, to be honest, Jaleel White was stale during this time period.
BOOM Sonic: He’s a more gumpy version of AoStH!Sonic, there’s nothing to say about his character.
Pontaff Sonic: Oh wow, Sonic acting his actual age! *Gets booed off and thrown tomatoes* To be honest, it wasn’t that bad of an attempt by Pontaff... It’s just that, they weren’t good outside of their comfort zone, which is the real reason why not a load of people like their portrayal of Sonic. If they had proper guidance, not ‘don’t do this, instead do this’ without nuance or context (like they probably had...), I’d bet they could have been better.
Underground Sonic: Ah, the butt of everyone’s jokes... too bad I find this Sonic portrayal to be far, far more accurate than the other American Sonic Portrayals. *chef’s kiss* I just... I can’t hate the guy. He’s both silly, snarky, and intelligent to be Sonic. But... I do recognize that not everyone’s gonna love him, so he’s here because I like him.
Sonic X Sonic: A Sonic that I base most of my Sonic ideas around -- really, mostly the first season, when he wasn’t a complete Deus Ex Machina and lost all of his funny cheerfulness. It’s the spotlight stealers, man... they suck out the best out of these characters...
Games Sonic: My other, more main go-to when I want to pull Sonic’s character. I often use the Storybook games to get the nuances of his character, Adventure and Adventure 2 to get his general personality, and 06 and Unleashed on How Sonic Handles affection/rejection.
