Stealth Hypocrisy

So, I was rewatching “Pressure Test” and at one point I had to slap my knee and laugh, saying out loud “Corrupt small-town sheriff is at it again!”

I don’t know if the writing staff is just sloppy, if they are trying to indicate that Noah Stilinski has memory problems, or if they want to paint Teen Wolf’s only sheriff as some sort of raging hypocrite because they want to woobify his son, but there is a point where I think we have to address the nepotic elephant in the room.

So, Tierney and Jiang, after watching their pack slaughtered by hunters, driven from their homes and pursued, watch their alpha get murdered, claim self-defense in turning the tables and attacking hunters whose names they learned.   They’ve been arrested; the sheriff insists that they be held for trial, no matter that there is a lynch mob outside.

Scott:   “It was self-defense!”  

The Law-Abiding Sheriff (paraphrase): “I still have two dead bodies.   There are rules I have to follow.”  

So far, so good right? So how did Stiles’ trial go?   Because the Sheriff had a confession and a dead Donovan in a drawer, and it’s the same situation.   If it’s not the sheriff’s place to determine if the killings were justified or not, it holds true in either case.

So what happened at Stiles’ trial?   (And yes, I know it’s probably crappy writing, but at some point you have to take what you are given.)   Just kidding, you and I both know there was no trial.   I wonder what reason the sheriff gave for not holding his son to the same standard.  

1) It’s my son!

2) Donovan wasn’t human, so he doesn’t get the full protection under the law, not like the hunters.

3) Jiang and Tierney weren’t white males hiding their terrible boy pain behind sarcasm and a complete disregard for other people.  

Then the sheriff has the nerve to lecture Scott the same way every other villain on Teen Wolf has lectured Scott, that once the bullets start flying, it’s kill or be killed.   Like any good law enforcement officer should.

I think its more that one of the themes in s5 was "keeping the supernatural a secret is more important than the law/ let the supernatural deal with its own" while one of the themes of s6b is "Yeah... that actually didn't really work."

I gave your idea a lot of thought, and it is true, in 5Ahuman law was particularly ineffective against the Dread Doctors.  It’s hard to build a case when the defendantsdon’t operate on the same plane of existence as you do and erase witnesses’ memories.   The sheriff gives it his best on severaldifferent occasions, and we sympathize with his frustration.  These are the tools he has, and they don’twork.

On the other hand, it doesn’t erase the pattern of when thesheriff chooses to stand on principle. With Tracy, he almost doesn’t relent.  As the season progresses, he’s desperate to uphold the law – except whenStiles is at risk of being implicated. When he begins to suspect Stiles in Donovan’s disappearance, he doesn’ttell anyone.   When Theo tells him thestory of Donovan’s hunt for Stiles, he doesn’t even bring Theo in forquestioning.  

You can say it is then he realizes the futility of trying toapply human law to this situation, but what causes the change?  When did he make that decision? He certainlystuck to his guns during the Kira situation.  The change came when his family was put in danger.

If you take into account that horrible speech in “DamnatioMemoriae”, where he’d burn “the entire sheriff station to the ground to protectyou,” I don’t think the theme was ‘the law doesn’t work.’  I think the theme is that the sheriff willabandon every single principle he stood for and every vow he took as a lawenforcement officer to protect his son.   We’re supposed to think that’s great, but it iscorruption.  

Though I do think your idea that the law can’t handle thesesituations continues on into Season 6B. Because the end result of the Sheriff’s insistence on pursuing legaljustice against Tierney and Jiang, is, make no mistake, their deaths (though that should not be blamed on the sheriff at all).  They are executed while in policecustody.   The best thing that the lawcould come up with is removing the pack from Beacon Hills, and that would havebeen a disaster as well as being completely unfair.  

I did want to point out something that came to me whilethinking about that question.  Anindefinite but significant number of people in the fandom rail on Scott for ‘blindlybelieving Theo over Stiles’ but they always neglect the fact that everyone elsedid too.  Especially the sheriff.    He accepts Theo’s story without a singlepiece of evidence except a mercury trail in the library.   He lets Theo walk free, gives him a hug, andnever pursues the investigation ever again.   (We can talk about how Lydia, Liam, and Stiles also believed in Theo,but there’s only one person who gets hated for it.)

“Damnatio Memoriae”:  Yep, Stiles is Still an Asshole

So, I was writing some fanfiction about season five and I was thinking about the ‘drawing the pack symbol’ scene, which I liked until this realization.  

Stiles has to be cajoled into forming it, and I didn’t have a problem with that, because we don’t want him to change too much, but he does draw it.  Because, even though he’s sarcastic about it, even though he bitches about the rest of the pack, he knows it is important to Scott. 

But then what little good feelings I got from that scene are drowned in the fiery pits of Perdition because of what happens next.   I’m ashamed, because I never realized it until now how f*cking crappy Stiles behaves in that scene.

Scott is actually helping Stiles walk out of the tunnels because he was paralyzed.

Stiles: I still hate that tattoo.

Scott:  I know.

There are two possibilities here -- either the writers crawled up Stiles’ ass so much that they forgot what the tattoo meant or they wanted to show that Stiles is the still the same self-absorbed little shitbag he’s always been.

Because that tattoo doesn’t just represent the pack for Scott -- it represents Allison.  He got that tattoo because of Allison.  In “The Divine Move” when he’s crying in his mothers arms over Allison, he’s stroking the tattoo.

Stiles must know this.  He has to -- he was present for the speech.  And he doesn’t freaking care, because the only thing that is important to him is that he doesn’t like it.

So, when I complain that the show spends too much time showing that Scott’s a better person by ignoring his own feelings, this is what I am talking about.   I choose to believe that Scott is willing to just ignore this asshole move on Stiles’ part, because he wants his friend back no matter what.  (That’s not emotionally abusive at all.)  When I complain that Stiles never grows one single inch in the show, this is what I am talking about.  When I complain that no one ever holds him responsible for his bad behavior, this is what I am talking about.  It’s not like  Allison’s death is a minor event.
