@flashfictionfridayofficial Happy New Year! The change of year really inspired me this week:
Genuine Drunk and Nostalgic
Word count: 613
Tw: drunk behavior (nothing too crazy, promise)
"I wish I could turn back time." They said.
"Why?"
They didn't answer. Their back was lazily resting on their best friend's chest, laying full of abandon on the couch. Head heavy on his shoulder, they gazed drunkenly at the clock on the far right wall. Was it swaying? No, they were. One too much drink. Or... two.
A chuckle escaped their lips, a soft sound full of purposeless joy. Behind them, two arms shifted to catch them in a warm loose hug. The laugh was contagious, and feeling their chest against their back twitch with malicious giggles, escalating into a heartfelt laughter, was making them even happier.
"What's so funny, um?" He tickled them mercilessly, he knew they would be unable to escape him and they knew he knew. It was always soooo easy for him to piss them off but, jeez they loved him so much!
"I want to go back in time" they repeated, stumbling through what little vocabulary they had left to put together a thoughtful sentence "because time... sucks."
Damn it! They could do better than that!
"It's not really that bad but... you don't know what will happen in the future. And it's scary. The present never stays, it always runs and then it's the past. It's gone, it's gone, it's just... gone. You're left with what you remember of it. I can't remember everything about everything all the time, I can't immortalise it all! And it's scary too.
I'm happy, right now. I'm so so so happy and a little bit lightheaded but that's not what I was talking about! What I say... what I was saying is that the happiness of now will be gone, very very soon. And I don't want it to, I don't, I don't want things to change, I don't want happy moments to go away. But it will and I can't help it. So I want to go back in time, and see again what made me happy, and who and when and how. Because I don't remember it all for sure! But I know I have been incredibly happy. I know it like I know you. Because you make me happy, and our other friends make me happy, and music, and parties, and chocolate cakes and staying late at night, stargazing, picking flowers, going for a swim, sharing a book and watching a movie together. And so many other things. These little things make me happy as obviously as the sun rising: you know it will happen, you wait for it, hoping it will be as beautiful as you remember it and somehow it's even better. Because it's right now before your eyes and not dulled out by your memory.
But the sun set, eventually. Tho it's the same sun that comes back the next morning the next happy moments won't be the same, never ever the same. I wish I had a time machine, or something, to go back and relive the moment before, but it doesn't work like that. That's how it is, and I don't like it. It's too sad, too definite. I don't want things to end, I don't want things to change, it's too sad. I want it to stay. I want to be with you like this forever and ever and ever but time runs and keeps running. The sun set. So… yeah, time sucks."
"You drank too much." The blatant truth came out after a long minute of him peering at the ceiling. He straightened up on the couch grabbing them by the hand until the hop on their feet "Come on, let's make you dance! Time can wait 'til we're sober."
