I’m from South Carolina. It exists in both states, with headquarters in North Carolina, but I think SC has had more incidents pop up? I think.
Fwiw: They’re entirely hated in both states, though, on a near universal level unless you’re just like out in the absolute middle of nowhere. Like. They were putting flyers on ppl’s cars at my alma mater once a few years back and now the campus beefed up security around parking lots tenfold.
They don’t use any variant of kkk though. Not publicly anyway. You can look at a list of names used on the Southern Poverty Law Center’s website here, but in general all groups use some title with ‘Knights’ or ‘White Knights’ in it and other word combinations that should tip you off.
To be frank with you: There’s tons of jokes about NC scraping its shit south, but really, Georgia is the one to really worry about — and the one that lets a lot of shit go unchecked.
Despite the stereotypes, most people in both states are actually genuinely nice to everyone, and I do mean that — sometimes to an annoying degree — even if they can be ignorant to/dated on social norms. Regardless of that, though, stay safe.
