So I’ve been having this thought since the HC8 finale and I finally got time to sit down and write about 500 words of agony.
Disclaimer: I take the Moon Big as an event that literally happened. I have nothing against Hermatrix enjoyers, people who prefer that idea because it guarantees the Hermits’ safety, or the Hermatrix itself as a whole. I just like the inherent tragedy of a server of beloved “gods” being literally destroyed and the reactions of everybody outside of HC. With that said, please enjoy the agony about to ensue. I also just prefer this method because I can fit my headcanons into it better.
Having said that, the agony is under the read more, and this runs on the idea that the HC Recap is a news show in universe and they do not have all the information needed to know certain things
(reblogs with tags or comments are appreciated since I don’t post my writing as much as my art. Thankyu)
It was. Hard. For the Recap studio to make the final update to the S8 edition of their show. Both Pix n Zloy were already busy with their own servers and now they had to cope with the fact that some of the Hermits may be dead and they were the two people expected to tell that to everybody. It was a hard responsibility and they didn’t even have the entire story…but someone had to break the news.
So when they aired that Finale S8 update for the universe to see…it was only a matter of time before the fallout. Millions of people were used to the recap being lighthearted and just explaining the on goings of the Hermits for those who wished they could know them.
And sure, everybody had been a little concerned when the Moon’s size had been commented on by the recap, but nobody thought much of it. Hermitcraft is a weird server. Clones are rampant, there’s a Void hole in the center of a town, one of them experiments on their friends. Hermitcraft is weird.
Nobody expected it to become tragic.
So when millions of people tune into this news show to hear that the members could be dead. People who may not know the Hermits. People who the Hermits considered family. People who were the Hermits’ family….People who were Hermits…. Everybody is holding onto hope that the Hermits are okay…but with how ambiguous some of the information was? The minds of these people were left to wander.
The Legates, who looked up to the Hermits, sympathizing with the sudden loss of a server. Seeing two who used to be their own…seemingly gone...
The Empires members, seeing people they considered friends, suffer a tragedy worse than most. Most notably are Sausage and Fwhip, who have to cope with the possible loss of their sister…
And then there’s the inactive and retired Hermits having to cope with the fact a server they called home once…just suffered. People like Pungence having to cope with the fact their family was on the server when that happened.
Not to mention the off server family that had never stepped foot on Hermitcraft… people like Skizzleman, who were blissfully unaware of the Moon situation until finding out that their brother was possibly dead... Until one of their family members was floating in the endless abyss of space, probably losing oxygen with every second that passes.
It was a depressing day when that newscast dropped… even if the Hermits are going to inevitably be okay… how are the people outside the server supposed to know that?
It had been a normal week for most Hermits, well, as normal as it could be on a server like Hermitcraft. However, normalcy had been disturbed for one Hermit.
That was Impulse.
Now Impulse didn’t have the most normal life. Being a former hybrid, turning into a walking corpse, time traveling, the likes. But he did have a few things that provided a sense of normalcy. Constants, if you will.

For example, no matter when, where, or what he was doing, he always had on the same brightly colored wristband. Tango and Zed also had one of these, and most of the Hermits assumed it was just a thing for the three of them.
That would be wrong. Yes, it was for the three of them, but not just them. The wristbands weren’t even started by any of them. They were started by their closest off-server friend, basically their brother at this point, aka Skizzleman.
Now, Tango and Zed hadn’t been around when the initial wristbands were created. Impulse was, though. And he was relatively young, for a Player. Probably not even in his mid-20’s yet.
He remembers how confused he was when Skizz wrapped blue cloth around his wrist. He remembers seeing a matching yellow cloth on Skizz’s wrist. Even when he couldn’t understand his brother… it didn’t take a genius to realize these were matching wristbands.
And when Tango began living with them, they weaved their original wristbands into tri-colored bands. Yellow, red, and blue. A color for each of them.
They added a purple band when Zed joined, and all of them had worn them ever since, it’s near impossible to find a photo of them without these.
It was just one of the constants in their lives, as was Skizz himself. Especially for Impulse. He didn’t know what he’d do without Skizz. He didn’t even think he’d be a person!
Which is why his week had been disturbed. Every other week for about two-ish months, Impulse had been sent a video from Skizz about what he’d been doing on Legacy SMP.
Impulse didn’t know too much about Legacy, but from what he’d seen in Skizz’s videos, it didn’t seem too different from Hermitcraft, save for the weird occurrences affecting how the Players lived. One time they were physically incapable of referring to anything by its actual name. That was a fun video to watch.
But this week was different. It had been a bit and Impulse hadn’t received a video in about 14 days. Two weeks. Whatever video Skizz was making for him must have been long. Which, Impulse didn’t mind. He missed his brother, so seeing him more would always be welcomed.
So he waited.
And waited.
And waited.
But the video never seemed to come in. Impulse checked his communicator every day, hoping for some update as to what was happening with Skizz. Now, normally, he wouldn’t be able to contact a non-Hermit while on Hermitcraft, but after the “Summoning Incident”, Tango had hardwired all of Team ZITS’s communicators so they could talk from anywhere. It helped relieve any of Impulse and Skizz’s fears about Impulse going missing or being kidnapped again.
Impulse wasn’t one to rush this kind of thing, despite how much he overworked himself. He was just genuinely worried about Skizz. This was, after all, Skizz’s first SMP. Now Impulse didn’t think Skizz was incapable of taking care of himself. Skizz had been living alone until he found Impulse, after all. He could clearly care for himself as far as Impulse knew.
It’s just…Skizz did not function well when in a place with people he saw as better than himself. Which was a lot of people. Even if Impulse told him he was just as deserving to be on Legacy as the rest of the people there, Skizz had still been really nervous when initially accepting the invite.
And Impulse had basically watched as Skizz tried to get comfortable around the Legates, he knew that his brother was in good hands…yet for some reason he was scared something had happened… if he didn’t get the video soon, he’d be worried even more. Then he’d work himself up over it and probably start overworking to try and cope with the worry, and there isn’t anybody here who’d tell him off. Not even Tango or Zed, since Tango is just as much a workaholic, and Zed barely leaves his cave…
The only person who could make Impulse realize he’s overworking himself would be Skizz. Last time they saw each other, Impulse, like he always was, had been overworking himself. And Skizz, like always, had just been wanting to have fun with him.
And that was one of the few days Impulse can remember just catching a break from work. Just getting to mess around and laugh and not have to think about unfinished projects or silly wars or a megabase… it had just been him, his brother, and the tridents they’d been chucking at each other.
It seemed like a world away, now. It hadn’t even been that long ago, either…
Despite all of this, though. Impulse acted like the absence of his brother’s update video didn’t bother him. Nobody other than Tango and Zed knew about the videos, anyways. Nobody would suspect Impulse was upset about that.
He acted like everything was fine until the next major Hermit meeting. They held these fairly often, but they had just had one not too long ago, so something was seriously wrong.
Impulse sat right where he always did, right between Zed and Tango, and waited to hear whatever was up.
And he expected literally anything else. Hermitcraft had dealt with its weird disasters before. Evil clones, nature itself overpowering his friends, mind control magic, the list goes on and on. The Hermits could handle pretty much anything.
And this situation wouldn’t be any different. Except…it wasn’t on Hermitcraft. Apparently the Legates had messaged Xisuma about something going on over on Legacy.
The pit in Impulse’s stomach was already growing. With everything they learned about the situation, it only got worse.
Apparently bad things were happening on Legacy, which, given what Impulse had seen of the server, wasn’t the most surprising.
But… apparently there was a missing member. Nobody could find them and they’d searched all three dimensions.
The gut punch of Impulse’s own fears was rearing itself up…
Everything after that was a blur. Impulse vaguely remembers crying on the steps of Town Hall, remembers Tango and Zed holding him and trying their best to calm him down.
He remembers having to be led home because he was crying too much to see. He… doesn’t remember much else, though.
Now he was in bed, curled up on himself and trying not to cry. He wasn’t doing a good job, though… any sense of a normal-ish week had been shattered in an instant during that meeting…
