Living Things| T.W.D
Chapter One:
I feel myself being reborn, a loud deep gasp leaves my mouth. My eyes open widely in surprise as I shoot up straight, the air is still and cold. It chills my nostrils as I take my first deep breath, I feel strange…
I don’t remember anything! Who I am, where I am, why or how I got into this four blank white walled square room. It’s only lit with a pale green hanging lamp directly above me. Maybe I’m in a hospital, but why isn’t there anyone to greet my awakening?
I look down at my knee long white and blue spotted cloth gown, I have no needles or machines hooked up into or around me. Nothing and no one in here but me, am I being isolated? But from who or what?
I bend my knees, flattening my feet to the naked cold aluminum table. My hands are like ice, and pale. You can see my blue and purple veins spread throughout the tops of my hands, I curl them into fists. I move them up to my mouth blasting my warm breath onto them, they shake violently.
I swing my long pale legs over the side of the table, placing them on the white marbled floor. I lean myself upright, I shakily walk over to the slightly green tinted wooden door with round metal handle and a single upright rectangle glass window little metal wires are patterned throughout the otherwise clear looking glass.
I twist the shocking cold handle, pushing the door open. It cracks loudly, but it’s the only noise I hear in the whole hospital no voices coming from anywhere. I see most of the ceiling lights flicker on and off down the abandoned halls, I walk with a limp on my right leg. A sharp pain creeps up to my hip and I wince clenching my jaw together tightly.
It’s best to stay quiet you don’t know who or what may be listening, a rotten smell poisons my nose as I reach halfway down the corridor. I pinch my nose as I continue my way, I hear wheels squeaking from a little ways down room. I look around the corner to see a man with a hospital gown like mine only the front is open, pushing an empty hospital bed away from the door he is stuck behind.
I cautiously walk over to the door helping the man move it, I push the door inward freeing the man. He looks at me confused, I look at his wound on his chest. A white bandage round around his torso, he has a thin light gray and brown beard on his face and chin.
“Hello, Sir.” I greet him in a hushed tone, in case there is unwanted company.
“Hi, Miss. Where is everyone? You are the only person I have seen since I woke up.” He asks in a gravelly voice, “I don’t know, I don’t know anything. Not even my own name…” I lick my lips nervously trying to find something to remember.
“My name is Rick, Rick Grimes. King County Sheriff Deputy.” The man tells he brushes his dark brown hair out of his face as he looks around at the surrounding halls.
“Nice to meet you, Mr. Grimes.” I look down seeing a glimmer of something in my eye, I notice a silver hospital bracelet, I slide it off.
I read the bracelet it reads: “Shadow Xiuhcoatl Zefania, 14 years old, 1997-2010.” Wait.. 1997-2010… Am I dead? I slide the bracelet back on, I look up at Rick.
“I remember my name… Shadow, Shadow Zefania.” I say to him, he nods.
“Nice to meet you. Shadow Zefania. Let’s go, I need to go to my house to find my family.” Mr. Grimes says and he turns to the place I came from and starts walking keeping his one arm bent at his side.
“Ok.” I say and follow, we make our way out of the hospital.
We see blood lots of it, people lay dead on the would be normally clean floor. We give each other fearful looks, we come to a metal door with thick black writing, a chain is locked around the handles, with a wooden block. “DON’T OPEN.” is written on the left side, and on the right “DEAD INSIDE.”. What does that mean? We both continue our way through trying to find a way out.
We come to a closed metal door, we look through the little windows to see a dead half eaten little girl in the middle of the floor under a flickering light. I jump back covering my mouth with both hands, Rick turns and looks at me he is petrified! We both nod and run through the hospital finding a door leading outside. We are on top of a dirty yellow gray concrete platform, we walk down the gray gridded painted steps with a guard railing.
I go down first to see hundreds of dead people with white sheets wrapping around them, thin robe ties the sheet to their bodies. Me and Rick make our way down a cleanish path, flies buzz around the heads of the dead. I stay in front of Rick in case something or someone attacks us, he isn’t in any condition to fight. We go left of the clear path to the helicopter pad, one is there.
Two swords are crossed on the nose, a number 7 below them. The the hell happened when we both were sleeping, everything is destroyed. No one is around but the bodies, I need to find my home but I don’t remember! I follow Rick to a park, a red bike lays on the ground. Another dead lays is on the grass, Rick leans up the bike. I hear hissing, and clicking teeth.
I look to the dead woman to see she is alive, half of her body is missing. Her inside organs or outside dragging behind her. Rick gets on top of the bike and starts peddling. I run to the best of my abilities, to keep up. We make it to his house, he jumps off the bike. Running up the dirty steps, pushing the open door inward.
“Lori…” he begins to say realizing she isn’t there, I turn and walk out of the house.
“I will go find my house and change, ok Rick…” I say, I walk two houses down so I can shout if I need help.
I walk inside, it feels familiar… I walk up the pale blue carpet steps leading upstairs, I turn and walk into a room with cream wallpaper with little flowers of different shapes and sizes. I go through a dresser pulling out low-rise flared blue jeans from the top drawer, I take off the gown and pull them up my legs. I wiggle into them, buttoning up and zipping it them closed.
I take out a long sleeve black shirt with a full moon in the center, I lay it on the twin bed with matching sheets like the wallpaper. I put on a black bra and pull the shirt over my head. I take a wooden brush, and go through my mid-back long rich chocolate brown hair. I fishtail braid my hair, and finish off with a black hair tie. I put on my socks and mid shin high winter boots, I look through the kitchen taking anything kind of weapon. As I pull a long steak knife out of the wooden block I notice a picture hanging on the wall beside it.
I’m with three other people I don’t remember, I pick the frame off the wall taking the photo out and turning to see what’s on the back. “ The Zefania Family: Shadow 14, Robbie 13, Marie 33, and John 32.” My family… I fold it in half putting it into my pocket. I fill a black backpack with food and survival gear, I walk outside to hear a gunshot. Rick. I run down the street to see two black people a young boy and his father, they take him away.
“Shit…” I growl to myself, I hope they don’t kill him. Sorry Rick I have to find my family, I wish you the best of luck. I run out of this town, I head for Atlanta. I walk the whole way, I reach the city in a couple hours. I stay quiet and make my way through the city, I find a gun and knife store. I go inside, a lot of weapons are still there, I take most of the handguns and hunting knifes. I zip up my back and head out, oh my god!
A huge ass herd of them is blocking my way out, I turn back to the store seeing pipes going up the building. I climb up making it to the roof, I climb over many rooftops trying to make my way out of this city that is no longer safe. I climb down another set of pipes jumping to the ground, landing on my feet.
I book it out, I run down the road leading into the mountains maybe it will be safer away from here. I wonder down the long curvy road leading up ontop of the mountain, dead leaves crunch under my boots as I walk through the forest. I hear wings flapping, I look up to the many tree tops that are a canopy over me. I hear a hollow shot before I scream out, feeling a sharp pain in my back like whatever hit me almost touched my heart or grazed my lungs.
I collapse and fall into darkness, hitting the cold hard leaf covered ground…
