“Why do you fight me, my love?” Matchablossom from the gargoyle rp starter meme
This was going to be all fluff and bickering while on a doubles couple’s vacation with Renga in a couple years post show setting. I am not sure why this afternoon when I looked at it again the prompt sentence decided it must go differently, but I hope you like it

“Why do you fight me, my love?” The words hit as a warm breeze, ruffling stray hairs into Kaoru's face, and are repeated, hotter and slightly damp, against the side of neck, under his ear instead of into it. He shivers unwillingly and shrugs. The movement of his shoulders is more than a delaying tactic; it should shake Kojiro off of him, but the gorilla hangs on tight. "Every time we're in public."
Curling in on yourself doesn't work the same way either when a larger body is curled around you so completely that it's hard to tell where you end and they begin. Strong arms to protect you from the world. Strong heartbeat synced up to yours beating against your back, pumping out Morse code (Beat. Beat beat. It's alright. Beat beat. Beat Beat. I'm here. Beat. Beat. You are loved.) prompting your breath to a steady rhythm too. Strong legs tangled into restraints--or tripping hazards at least-- so you can't get up and run.
"Habit," Kaoru finally replies, and it's not like Kojiro can argue. It's how they've always been.
"I like to get your blood racing," Kaoru purrs the second answer, and he feels Kojiro smile against his shoulder. No arguments there either, though Kaoru guesses there wouldn't be when wanting to stop arguing all the time was what he could assume Kojiro's unspoken motivation in pursuing this question was.
"Sometimes you really do get on my nerves." Kaoru feels like he's given enough answers by now (He certainly doesn't owe Kojiro any more after the oaf bites him in repayment for the truth and then laughs when he yelps), but explanations keep tumbling out. "We have to keep up appearances."
Kaoru feels Kojiro tense, becoming a cage now instead of a cradle. "Don't be that way." Kaoru didn't want to hurt him, and doesn't want to blame him for possibly being hurt anyway, but facts are facts. “That’s just how it is.”
"Why?" Kojiro's whisper is rough and Kaoru feels his own throat thicken and tongue become heavy.
The possibility of losing business they would do just fine being rid of anyway. Parents Kaoru barely speaks to. Their respective "brands" at S. Kojiro doesn't even give Kaoru the courtesy of naming any of the (trivial when compared to them) options. If Kaoru wants to argue, Kaoru has to say it, whatever it is that's more important to him than them.
"You're the one that runs around with..."
"Say the word and I won't," Kojiro cuts his never-quite-boyfriend off firmly enough to make the declaration absolutely definitive. Not even a word, just a nod, and heart, soul, and body right down to wandering eyes would never stray from Kaoru again, any part that still kept the habit to begin with.
There's silence in the bedroom. It's cold where it had been so comfortably warm a few minutes ago. Neither move to pull up the covers.
Time ticks on.
"I didn't presume that I could." Kaoru meant to snap. It sounds like a soft confession instead.
Kojiro planned to take offense at Kaoru's answer, but the fragility of Kaoru's tone makes it more difficult.
"It's easier to keep some distance. It has to hurt less when you change your mind, if I remind myself that you're just a dopey gorilla and we don't even get along. That's why I fight you...my very dearest Little Kojiro....my love." Kaoru could fall apart in the space of a breath. It seems fortunate then that Kojiro is still formed into the perfect mold to pour the dissolved pieces back into and re-forge them stronger if need be.
"If not when." Kojiro has kept his own emotions in check enough to be contrary at least. "And I wouldn't change my mind about you. I never could." He sounds like the words are ripped out of his chest. He's suffering. He's also breathing a laugh against Kaoru's neck again, though when he ducks his head more and his eyes hit the skin of Kaoru's bare shoulder his eyelashes are damp. Kaoru. Four-eyes. My cinnamon stick baby. What can I do to prove that? How many more years will it take?"
"I don't know," Kaoru answers truthfully. "Maybe the rest of our lives." He's not happy about it. He loathes how needy he sounds. How insecure he is, and how it is hurting the amazing man wrapped around him.
Hurting him enough that he has to see now you aren't worth it and leave you, the evil voice in Kaoru's head still says, though he can force it to quiet--for this moment at least.
"I'm in," Kojiro answers immediately, forcefully, jovially, even if the chipperness sounds a bit strained. "Works out well for me."
"You didn't even have to think," Kaoru marvels.
"You know by now I don't think, Shrimpy."
"Dimwit," Kaoru says with all the love in his heart.
Kojiro doesn't protest the arguing this time.
