why I like them: honestly Midna is one of the best examples of character development done right?? sideyes own url lmao. she is so flawed but she g r o ws and changes and learns to care so much for Link and Zelda and their cause. at first she doesn’t seem to have a lot of redeeming qualities there unless you just like snarky characters, but if you hate being bossed around by someone who won’t bother to tell you what’s going on she’s a nightmare. but there’s this gradual softening of her demeanor and she begins to open up more and there’s just a lot going on in her head that really touches you and makes you genuinely want to care about her and her realm. she’s never really an open book, but what she does say goes a long way. in a lot of ways, TP is Midna’s story more than anyone else’s, and the obvious love that went into the gradual revelation of her true nature and motivations really makes you feel that. she’s badass and complex and emotional and quick-thinking all at once and also fucking RUTHLESS which I l o v e - strong and determined and willing to make sacrifices. she loves and hates with equal passion and fights with everything she’s got. honestly I could say a whole lot more but I’m going to break off here before I actually write a novel.
why I don’t: wow there isn’t a whole lot of stuff I could say here? I’m biased af tbh. the only characteristic of hers I really see as a negative thing (though imo flaws ARE a good thing character-wise, this would probably bother me in any real-life circumstance) is that she can be really cagey and sometimes does not communicate well. or at all. also she literally LEAVES Link to fight shadow beasts alone?? ? she knows how they work, she’s obviously fought them before but she’s like “you can handle this” and then just ditche s him flkdhskgh. although don’t get me started on how it probably destroyed her to kill what were actually her own subjects with their minds taken from them and reduced to monsters, but still. dick move, Mids.
favorite moment: I have to choose? um probably the moment in the desert where she confides in Link about her curse, and asks him to come with her to find the Mirror of Twilight. it’s one of the few instances in the game where we get to see a lot of her uncertainty and self-loathing, and her tone/expression when she actually requests something of him, the way she falters like she doesn’t actually know if he’ll say yes (despite the fact that he’s already agreed and this is the second time she’s asked), is really!!! important!! also when she kills Zant because holy moley it’s heartbreaking and terrifying and such a great moment character-wise
favorite line: “This world...all worlds can be cruel.” also “a fake is a fake, but no matter how you dress it up, the real thing always wins!” also I seem to remember during one of the boss fights she tells Link to just try all of his sword techniques until he finds one that works lmao. and there are so many more meaningful ones besides the above. and obviously that one I have as my description right now is one of my faves.
favorite outfit: “true form” all the way. she’s fucking stunning and she EARNED THAT SHIT. she is also taller than the tallest tree in Hyrule probably. seriously, her Twili design is probably my all-time favorite character design period and definitely my favorite to draw. cursed form sans helmet gets honorary mention.
favorite platonic relationship: um, does Link count? their relationship in all its aspects gives me li f e I don’t know where I’d be without these kids. her interactions with Zelda and their relationship dynamic are also v important; they’re my default brotp for this game.
head canon: ok ok my entire existence revolves around this question basically so I’m going to try to. exercise restraint lol. an important one is that I firmly believe Midna kept the shadow crystal after TP instead of leaving it with Link, both to keep its evil magic contained and to leave no tangible trace of Twilight or its inhabitants behind in his realm. I also headcanon her with a love of music and a proficiency for singing. I think she enjoys the big picture of government: her people are her life and she loves leading and being their hope and strength. she’s such an achiever and puts her entire heart and soul into ruling with wisdom and grace, but I think the day-to-day of bureaucracy and its idiosyncrasies irk her to no end. dealing with anything that slow kills her, especially when she herself is so efficient and brilliant at what she does, but for what it’s worth she tries to be patient. I imagine this doesn’t always work though, and every so often someone who deserves it is going to get fuckin’ told lm a o.
unpopular opinion: I actually have a lot, I think? probably the most unpopular is: her decision to break the mirror was actually the best possible course of action imo. like that was not going to work. there was no other logical end to that progression of events, and she’s been hinting at it literally since they started looking for the shards. looking at this from a big picture standpoint (and Midna is all about the big picture) it doesn’t matter what bonds she’s formed with light dwellers or what they could potentially learn from being allies. the light literally kills her subjects and the shadow transforms light dwellers to spirits: there’s literally no way either of them could be safe with that kind of door between realms in existence, as Zant had so thoroughly proven. also the mirror is implied to be an inherently evil object by nature, so yeah, it’s getting smashed. yeah, it sucks, yeah all three of them probably have some real issues to deal with afterwards, but they literally just fought a war and took down the king of darkness and she’s queen of an entire dimension. they’re strong, and they have lives to live. they’ll be all right, even if it takes a while. relentlessly explores alternate courses of events in fanfic tho
a wish: echoes nyxvuur here but I just want her to be happy. she deserves so much and I just want her to be strong and joyous and thoroughly empowered like the actual goddess she is.
an oh-please-don’t-ever-happen: I see this in fanfic a lot where Midna is unable to function after breaking the mirror and sincerely regrets her action/is shown to have had no legitimate reason for her decision and I just?? ? no??????? ?? don’t ever strip Midna of her power like that she fucking knows what she’s doing, she is stronger than literally anyone and generally so much more than a hasty irrational sass bucket sit down and think about your life please and thank.
5 words to best describe them: badass, complex, goddess, tenebrous (which has a lovely dual meaning of being dark in the literal sense and difficult to understand), and thanks to dusk’s flawless portrayal - wildfire.
my nickname for them: Mids, twilight queen (I don’t think these are unique since I’ve seen other people use them)
