The ubiquitous Mr. Lovegrove
It was only meant to be a weekend layover the day he stepped foot on Kensington soil – a short sabbatical on his way to Belgium, where he would take part in the Gentse Feesten. After the ten-day carnavale Matty had plans to travel on to France and then Spain before finally reaching his true destination, Morocco.
As a boy Matty had always dreamed of traveling the globe and experiencing everything that the world had to offer. Growing up on the sun-kissed beaches of California had helped shaped the boy into the man he was destined to become and upon completion of Ilvermorny, he’d packed a bag, kissed his family goodbye and set out on his very first adventure. Now here he was, two years later, chasing a dream that spanned several continents with no intention of slowing down – or so he thought.
The air was comfortable cool as he exited the hotel lobby and stepped out onto the street. Nightfall had arrived several hours prior and Matty was looking to take in as much of his new surroundings as he possibly could in the short amount of time he was there. He walked aimlessly and without purpose, letting the city lead him on a wandering path that eventually found him on a crowded street somewhere downtown. He slowed as he came up on a crowd of people out front of what appeared to be a nightclub, his gaze wandering over the brightly illuminated sign that ready Incendio – sandwiched between two unassuming looking buildings. It wasn’t anything new, witches and wizards had been hiding in plain sight for centuries, but Matty had to admit, he was mildly intrigued. As he drew closer his eyes fell on the massive line that was roped off with red velvet along the side of the building and he quirked a brow. He tried to recall ever hearing of the place but came up empty; perhaps it was new.
He considered the line again, trying to weigh his limited time and wondering if this place was actually worth it. “You.” A voice cut through the crowd like a knife and he lifted his gaze to find a severely beautiful witch staring intently at him, hands resting on her hips and red-painted fingernails drumming methodically at her middle. Matty arched a brow at her and the corner of her blood-red painted mouth curled with a smirk as she beckoned him forward with a solitary digit. He couldn’t help but smile because, of all the places he’d travelled, there was always a mysterious woman who ended up being more trouble than she was worth. “You.” Matty responded flippantly, still smiling as he took a few steps through the parted crowd, closer to the woman. She looked exactly how you would imagine she might – all sleek shiny hair and clothes that appeared to be hewn specifically for her svelte form. “Aren’t you precious.” She practically purred as he closed the distance and Matty got the distinct impression that this woman could eat him alive if she so chose it. “I-“ She held up a hand to cut him off, shaking her head slowly. “No, don’t speak, love, you’ll ruin it.” Her hands came off her hips and she crossed her arms loosely across her front, shamelessly appraising Matty from toe to the top of his head. “Looking for some fun?” Matty’s brow arched sharply and he smirked, the woman’s expression immediately turned withering. “Oh, you sweet thing, you can’t afford me, but I’m feeling generous so why don’t you come inside, hm?”
Matty watched as she reached out and unclasped the velvet rope and held it aside for him, gesturing for him to pass. He stood there for a moment, glancing at the massive line of angry looking people who were glaring at him. He had no idea what was on the other side of that rope, but if this wasn’t an adventure practically flailing to get his attention, he didn’t know what was. “Names’ Matty.” He said as he passed her, flashing her a grin. “Don’t care.” She replied loftily before shooing him towards the large marble doors and dismissing him. He chuckled to himself as he tugged one of the doors open and stepped down into a dimly lit tunnel that led to yet another door. He could hear the deep, inset pulse of music as his fingers closed around the handle of the door and pulled it open, smoke, heat, and an impossibly loud baseline all rushing up to greet him as he stepped inside.
Incendio was definitely impressive, he’d give Kensington that much. From the live fire trailing the walls to the expensive décor, Matty was not at a loss for things to look at. His gaze continued moving, trying to take everything in as he made his way to the bar. It was just as crowded inside the club as it was outside, although he did manage to squeeze in to drop an order with the bar back. From the outside Incendio looked like it was trying really hard to make itself appear like a regular club, but Matty knew a sex club when he saw one – even one wrapped up in a shiny, expensive bow.
It wasn’t as if any of this bothered him – he’d seen far more blatant displays in his travels. Drink in hand, he wove his way through the crowds and was lucky enough to snag himself a leather armchair on the balcony, which provided a perfect view of most of the main level of the club. He fished a hand-rolled cigarette from his pocket and lit it before leaning back in his seat to people watch for a while. Something interesting was bound to happen soon enough – it always did.
