Anyway now that I’ve given myself a chance to gnaw on it a while:

Meanwhile Yue Qingyuan already knew that his Xiao-Jiu was gone in anyway that mattered. It was impossible for him to miss. No one knew Shen Jiu like he had to think someone new could take his place without him bowing? Ridiculous. Impossible. But after many tests when he was in his denial stage he did gather this new Shen Qingqiu has no bad intentions and is beholden to some higher power based on the way he sometimes glares at thin air or pales like he is being threatened by something only he can see which set his protective instincts screaming.

He never intended to be anything but distantly polite to this new Shen Qingqiu.

But then Shen Qingqiu looked frightened. But then Shen Qingqiu nearly choked on a laugh he couldn’t quite hide when their eyes met during a peak lord meeting. But then Shen Qingqiu comes back from a sudden “important mission” with a child on his hip.

And it aches but he slowly learns to fall in love again for someone who wears a familiar face but is so different.

Meanwhile once Shen Yuan is sat down by Mama Luo and informed in no uncertain terms that the sect leader is courting him. Slowly. With small words. Repeated often. He is going through a whole crisis about it’s not really him the feelings are for but he can’t tell anyone that all without knowing Yue Qingyuan already knows.
