y'know what, when i first got into dead boy detectives, i really didn't think that bisexual charles rowland would become canon in this way, but honestly at this point, i'll take what i can get

if he's not in season 2 of dead boy detectives kissing edwin, and he's not in season 2 of the sandman kissing edwin, then y'know what hell yeah, i'll take three — probably accidental— words out of a tudum article as confirmation

I don’t think anyone has written this AU yet:

Edwin and Charles first meet at school in early 1916 when Charles freezes to death in the attic. Edwin didn’t realize he was dying and is horrified, and Charles as a ghost tries to reassure him. Edwin can’t see, hear, or feel Charles, but he can sense the ghost is there.

With practice, Charles learns to manipulate solid objects and writes messages for Edwin. They continue to meet in secret in the attic and become friends. Charles defends Edwin from bullies by day and keeps watch over him by night. One time, Edwin wakes from a nightmare, and Charles reassures him. As he drifts off again, he can almost half-see Charles there, half-hear his voice wishing him sweet dreams.

But Charles doesn’t watch Edwin every second. He patrols the school, and one night he returns to the dormitory to find Edwin missing, as well as several of his tormentors. He searches frantically, and reaches the cellar just as the boys finish the summoning ritual. Charles isn’t fast enough to save Edwin from Sa’al. As Edwin dies, he can see Charles clearly for the first time and screams his name.

Charles watches his best friend dragged to Hell and absolutely loses it. He tracks the book back to its source and then spends the next several decades learning everything he can about the occult and supernatural, searching for a way to bring Edwin back or open a door to Hell for himself. Nothing works. He even speaks to Death herself, but she can’t help him, and he won’t move on with her. Edwin is his unfinished business, but he can’t save him. He doesn’t want to become a mindless vengeful ghost, so he returns to the school and dedicates his existence to protecting other boys, to ensure what happened will never happen again.

Decades later, Edwin crawls out of Hell in his bloodstained pajamas and finds himself back in the school cellar. He lies there, exhausted, and until he hears a familiar voice calling his name. He looks up and sees the impossible—a face he’s only seen twice before yet will never forget—and he answers, voice full of disbelief and longing.

“Charles?”

They both have some major trauma to work through. They both watched, powerless, as their best friend was taken from them. They both blame themselves for the other’s death. But they’re together now, and nothing will ever separate them again.

just realized netflix is probably gonna put dead boy detectives in “lists of shows to watch while waiting for stranger things 5” like they did for wednesday and you know what ill take those crumbs of acknowledgment

i love it when the boys go into team mode. like when they're messing with twitchy richie and immediately establish that charles will throw him around and edwin will throw papers and move the scissors for dramatic effect. the drama brawn and the drama brain.
