Natives who are not otherwise straight or cis, how would you say you categorize yourself?
I am LGBTQ AND twospirit
I am LGBTQ but not twospirit
I am twospirit but not LGBTQ
I'm a tribe specific identity AND twospirit
I'm a tribe specific identity only
tribe specific identity and LGBTQ but not twospirit
all of the above
other
Just as a reminder:
twospirit is a Native American exclusive umbrella term to describe sexualities and genders that Natibe American tribes either traditionally had, and/or to describe Native Americans special relationship to sexuality and gender outside of the Eurocentric, Western framework. Twospirit can mean different things to different people depending on the tribe or from person to person. Some Natives consider themselves twospirit but not LGBTQ, or vice versa.
"Tribe specific identity" here is meant to refer to specific identities that exist to describe gender or sexuality specific to that tribe's culture, such as the Lakota Winkte or Cree Ayakwew. Some people might identify as a tribe specific identity but not twospirit, or describe themselves using both.
So, um, which acronym is correct?
LGBT
LGBTQ
LGBTQ+
LGBTQIA
LGBTQIA2S+

Quoting @nahannifontaine on Twitter this morning: "It’s not enough to say you support MMIWG2S on this National Day of Awareness for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls & Two-Spirited. It’s two years since the National Inquiry released its Final Report declaring genocide against Indigenous women, girls and two-spirited. Despite this, we still do not have a national or provincial strategy on implementing the 231 Calls to Justice. So wear red today. Attend memorials virtually or safely in person if allowed. Reach out to MMIWG2S families with acts of support and kindness. But recognize, May 5th is also a Day of Action in honour of MMIWG2S. So email your MP and MLA in pushing their governments to implement the Calls to Justice. Fight for the protection of Indigenous women, girls and two-spirited. Our lives depend on it." Image reposted from @mmiwg.help.our.sisters Image description: An illustration of an Indigenous woman and/or two-spirited person with two long dark brown braids of hair raising her/their right first toward the sky while looking upward. She/they is/are wearing a hand mark over her/their mouth to signify the disproportionate violence and silencing faced by Indigenous women, girls, and two-spirited people. The background is red and, above her/their to the right of the image in darker red block letters it reads: "NO MORE STOLEN SISTERS". #nomorestolensisters #mmiwg2s #mmiwg #mmiw #missingandmurderedindigenouswomen #indigenous #girls #women #children #twospirit #twospirited #decolonize #landback (at Turtle Island) https://www.instagram.com/p/COfsxEcg8PR/?igshid=10y5ehp1oi4w6
Posted @withregram • @iamlexchandra THE GENDER BINARY IS A VIOLENT COLONIAL TOOL OF SOCIAL CONTROL. Write that down. 🦩🦩🦩🦩🦩🦩🦩🦩🦩 Image description: [tweet by @joashilia on Twitter 1/6 “ I wish more people recognized how much the gender binary is rooted in colonialism. Prior to their colonization, Africans and other indigenous people not only had spaces for trans, genderfluid, and non binary people, but they were often venerated within the society...” 2/6 “The concept of a gender binary as it exists today (male v female) was an introduced concept. For many cultures, gender was not limited to sexual organs. Religious systems often allowed for and encouraged diff gender expression. Additionally, there were more than just two genders” 3/6 “For example, African deities and spirits in the Vodou framework can present as feminine, masculine, agender, trans, or genderfluid. In Vodou spirit possessions, women can temporarily “turn into” men by being inhabited by a masculine spirit and vice versa.” 4/6 “In Native American cultures, two-spirit (a sort of third and sometimes fourth gender representing both masculine and feminine spirits) and intersex individuals would serve important roles in traditional religious ceremonies” 5/6 “Even gender roles and the societal value of women were heavily influenced by colonization. Traditionally, female agricultural labor and reproductive ability were so highly valued in Africa that husbands had to pay a Brideswealth to the bride’s family for their loss of income.” 6/6 “Alternatively in Europe, the custom was for the bride’s family to pay the husband a Dowry because it was assumed that he’d be taking on a financial responsibility who couldn’t provide for herself.”] #transgender #twospirit #twospirited #queer #enby #nonbinary #genderfluid🌈 #genderfluid #genderisasocialconstruct #genderbinary #colonialism #decolonize #decolonizeyourmind #decolonizethisplace #decolonizeyourbookshelf #vodou #femme #masc #masculine #feminineenergy #indigenousculture #deities #intersex #intersexisbeautiful #transisbeautiful #blacktranslivesmatter #genderroles #blacktranswomen #blacktransmen #lgbtqhistory https://www.instagram.com/p/CDwZGW_h7fb/?igshid=gt2yy8myh2sw
