From popcorn, to hominy, to tortillas and atole; I love it all. Sometimes I can’t seem to wrap my brain around the idea that this vegetable was able to sustain our people. This single vegetable is an essential part to our everyday life and it’s easy to get caught up with life and overlook this simple fact. Our people eat it and use it everyday for foods: tortillas, chips, salsas, teas, tamales and the list goes on. I grew up working on a berry farm til the age of 11, then helped my family’s landscaping business. I recall being angry at the fact that I had to spend my summers working while my friends didn’t; I had to spend my summers waking up at dawn and working under the hot sun while my friends didn’t. Despite all that, I’ve grown to appreciate the land and fruits. I learned how to cultivate it and mold it; the work that it takes to make a single berry grow and have the corn stalks soar high. I just want to insert a thank you to all the agriculture workers who work hard to put food on our plates and theirs.
