Ty Mayfield opened for The Icarus Account on Sunday night and boy was I glad I got there early.
He has a stage presence that just pulls you in right when he starts playing and even intertwined random songs like 'Jealous' (Nick Jonas) and 'We Are Never Getting Back Together' (TSwift) into his originals. Not only does this guy know how to reel in a crowd, but he also seems pretty down to earth too.
After the concert he talked to me and my friends for about thirty minutes, just nerd-ing out about ZZ Ward and concerts that we've all been to. His music was so good and he was such a sweet person that I was a softie and bought BOTH of his albums (I don't regret this decision one bit...especially since they are now autographed...). I even told him I had a long drive early the next morning and he recommend the track 'Nobody but You', because it talks about 'driving up the coast with the windows down' (naturally I listened to both albums in their entirety...multiple times...).
The song I chose above has to be my favorite of his songs and happens to be the first track on his newest album that is self-titled. It has some soul and sass (manly sass that is) that just makes you want to belt it out while doing those half dance moves that you do while driving (definitely speaking from experience here).
'Now We're Getting Somewhere' gives his a sound a bit of a jazz feel and shows off his smooth voice as well as the control he has over it. The beginning of the song is very ZZ Ward-esque (funny cause we talked about her) but his overall type of music reminds me of Eric Hutchinson or Ben Rector, with his own unique twist of course.
The gist is that he's a crazy nice person, with a great voice and some serious song writing skills. I personally can't wait to see a full band show and wish Ty all the best in the future.
