TMC: The Narrative, at a glance (book 1)

Even though Mati is the ultimate protagonist, she is not the first one we meet. Or, if she is, it would only be to provide context for the overall narrative. Our first protagonist is a young woman named Tyke, and it is her pov for the first book in the series.

Tyke's position in the overall narrative is that of the Fool. She is young, naive, adventurous. She is the constant throughout the story, able to travel through dimensions and visit every messiah (she is not one of the twelve messiahs). The reader can think of Tyke and Mati as bookends--two constants on opposite sides of time who weave through all other settings and characters. Tyke meets the very first messiah of the cycle, a woman named Holloway, after her train is attacked by demons. Holloway helps Tyke and her group survive the perils of the demon-infested landscape, and Tyke discovers more about Holloway's past as something called The Angelsage--basically, Holloway is nearly a thousand years old and has super powers that help her fight demons and not get killed. Tyke also discovers that, in a past life, she was the catalyst for Holloway's supernatural abilities. At the end, Holloway sacrifices herself to save Tyke's life, infusing her with some of her supernatural powers and making it possible for Tyke to enter a portal that takes her to an unknown realm. Her entering the portal destroys the city around her, but it destroys the hell portals as well, and also gives earth enough of a signature to attract something very different from demons--aliens.
