Just a 'little' rant
T1D here, just here to say I'm gettin real tired of people's shit. I hate that people lump all diabetics into one group of 'you ate too much sugar now you pay the price'. Its Bull. Shit. Not only is it wildly inaccurate for type 1's, but it is only something that increases the RISK of type 2. SUGAR DOES NOT CAUSE DIABETES. PERIOD. it. Is. A. Biological. Misfunction. An. Autoimmune. DISEASE. Stop blaming the victims. People get hissy (rightfully so) when people blame the rape victims for their rape. This is no different. My body decided to attack my beta cells, kill 'em all dead, and yet I am the one who gets blamed for having diabetes? And yes, you may have seen me eating a shit ton of sugary foods leading up to my diagnosis, and you wanna know why? Because my body was STARVING. As my beta cells were slowly dying off, my body started to become unable to absorb the energy it gets from food, so my body became the food. I am very much a victim of this disease, and I would appreciate not getting blamed for it. And full disclosure, I used to be one of those ignorant people, not the blaming kind mind you, but I did have the misconception that eating too much sugar caused diabetes. I had never been taught differently, and that's part of what makes me so frustrated. I have no right to be angry at those who don't have an understanding of what exactly diabetes is, because until I had to deal with it myself, I didn't really give it much thought either. But I do have to deal with it now. And I hate that I was so woefully ignorant and it took me nearly dying to learn anything about this disease. So, not only is this a rant, but a bit of a psa to those who were like me. Go do some Google searches, if you know a diabetic, talk to them, ask what it's like. But never. And I mean NEVER give advice to a diabetic about their disease unless they ask for it because I promise you that they know much much more than you about not only their disease but their own body.
Thanks for coming to my TED talk.
