She was the goddess of the lost, of paperclips on the floor and receipts blown away in the wind. She looked after pennies and nickles and dimes, placing them at the bottoms of fountains. Her library had whole shelves devoted to love letters that had tumbled from mailboxes and cards that got crumpled in bags. He told her time and again that he was her anchor, that he would keep her grounded. Coffee and rainwater may well have been her favorite things. There was little she loved more than a chair by the window, a warm mug in her hand and the steady rhythm of droplets against the roof. She loved the smell, strong coffee and rich, damp earth. They mixed together and held her close. Whole days could slip past this way and she would not complain. No, she just may encourage it. She liked the weight of things; they helped keep her grounded. Sensations worked too, sometimes. It was the pull of keys in her pocket, the itch of the seatbelt across her neck. The burn of warm metal and the heady scent of gardenias. The ragged edge of well - loved paperbacks and the prickle of humid wind. Those were the moments she used to anchor herself, the ones that kept her from growing crazy. They reminded her that some things were only things. . . . Sunset is a magical time. The day fades away, heat abating, sky darkening. The stars peek out from behind the planets. Its slow and dainty and graceful, and maybe a tad mysterious.
