The situation in Japan right now
Okay so in all seriousness, Typhoon Hagibis is no joke. It’s not a couple of rugby matches or F1 cancellations (yes some people are actually more concerned about this!), it’s deaths and mass destruction.
Hagibis made landfall at around 7pm local time, but it’s been causing damage all day. At the moment, the worst places seem to be Shizuoka, Kanagawa, and Chiba, but basically the majority of the kanto region is in danger. The Tama river is particularly bad.
Purple is top level life threatening warnings, orange is medium, yellow is danger.
It’s not just the typhoon part. The main issue is actually the flooding, with all of this water. Many houses have been entirely submerged and entire bridges have collapsed. On top of that, the water is causing huge landslides which are also destroying homes. If that’s not enough, there were also multiple tornadoes, and a magnitude 4 earthquake just a few hours ago. Japan is being tested today.
I believe almost a million people have had to evacuate, and around 12 have died so far. This is very real and very terrifying. So many people have been injured or made homeless, and many are without power. (Personally I’m okay, I live on the 8th floor of a strong building, not particularly close to any rivers or hills. I’m incredibly fortunate. Though, I have to remained glued to the news just in case of evacuation notifications.)
Please, keep Japan in your hearts today. Outside my window right now, the storm is still picking up, and it’s truly frightening.
Goes without saying, but if you happen to be anywhere near Tokyo or the surrounding areas right now, PLEASE take care of yourselves. Keep up to date with the news on tokyo times or nhk!
