“Fantasy is true, of course. It isn’t factual, but it is true. Children know that. Adults know it, too, and that is precisely why many of them are afraid of fantasy. They know that its truth challenges, even threatens, all that is false, all that is phony, unnecessary, and trivial in the life they have let themselves be forced into living.”
— Ursula K. Le Guin, The Language of the Night
actually speaking of this next book im reading i really like this line
Neanderthals are frequently spoken of as if they were dead-ends of human evolution or they went extinct because of modern humans or barely contributed anything at all to modern humanity, but i like this sentence because it actually frames them more as a success. more of their DNA exists on earth now than when they were alive as their own species. merging with the humans out of africa wasn't a death sentence it was what made them everlasting.
An experiment in language change
Nifty little language game here.
I can read back to 1500 with basically no difficulty
at 1400 I have to read slowly and carefully, but I can understand all of it save a couple words
at 1300 I can still comprehend most of it if I read slowly, but a much larger percentage of the words are unfamiliar to me, even with context
1200 and earlier are almost totally unintelligible
It kind of fucks with me that somebody killed ötzi the iceman because ötzi himself is like whatever but the silent presence of human hands that drew back the string of the bow that shot the arrow that killed him is crazy. the idea that there were various people involved in that situation and while one of them has had his last hours painstakingly reconstructed and studied to no end, the others now only exist insofar that an arrowhead had to get into his shoulder somehow. imagine killing someone and then suddenly your entire existence is only a vague shadow implied by the fact that you killed them. much to consider
Testing the mummified bone marrow of ötzi to figure out his ancestry whole time there’s definitely another person, maybe more than one, standing in the room with us but I can never see or speak to them because I only know them through the assurance that they were there too in the form of one single arrowhead. I hate prehistory so much it’s unreal
I hate it too tbh
lesbian texting their straight guy friends: it genuinely worries me that people are going to start with Vineland and get turned off to Pynchon forever. it’s not even that challenging but it’s like…others from him are so superior in basically every way?? this happened with Inherent Vice too like ok let’s all KILL OURSELVES
lesbian texting their bisexual guy friends: Omg hiii I actually do not know anyone who would be a good fit to run in bar marketing for the doritos infused tequila but thank you for thinking of me!! Are you still doing the MFA???
lesbian texting their gay guy friends: Of COURSE you can have my french onion soup recipe. Don’t worry.
lesbian texting their straight girl friends: that hang was sooo needed. genuinely think this is going to be your year 🫶 seriously I mean it.
lesbian texting their bisexual girl friends: I know. I feel the same way—that this is the year my father’s corpse, which I drag with me on my back every winter, finally stops keeping me warm.
lesbian texting their lesbian girl friends: do you think Tim Roth from Reservoir Dogs is a woman
Just saw a reblog on a post start with "sorry y'all, but I'm about to use my degree" and then immediately state a factually untrue statement. I love this website.

#are those cows small or is that cat huge?#or maybe a little of both
Those are calves! So yes, they are small. Calves will often lick or suck on random soft things as a nursing behaviour, like how little kids will suck on their thumbs. They'll do it to each others' ears and, apparently, to this cat.
The cat seems to be interpreting this as a grooming behaviour, so everybody's being friends but in different ways.
thinking about all the unique mental disorders only fish have. I'd like to read the DSM-F (DSM-Fish) but it's only available in the ocean
always fascinated by which things people assume are unique to their culture and which they assume are universal. listening to an australian podcast right now and they are very confident that nobody will understand that 'cozzie' is short for 'swimming costume' and explain it every time it comes up, but they give zero information about swooping season because surely everyone gets attacked by birds for like a month a year
this is implying that all countries don't have some sort of territorial bird that swoops people in urban areas during nesting season, which seems frankly insane
well maybe you should blearily wake up at 5:08 in the pre-dawn light and find the sleeping soft tiny mammal body of your cat just inches from your head like a miracle too beautiful for speech, and you should rustle one hand out from your blankets to rub fingertip circles across the warm eggshell dome of her little velvet-wrapped skull and on the bristly patches just where the cups of her ears begin, and as she inclines her head into your fingers and purrs without ever opening her little eyes you should feel a love so tender that you understand how that love could have reached out from the fireside into the inky spangled nights long gone to reach her, and then you'll feel better
i am at a complete loss as to how to adequately express to you how much this cat throws up yeah
